Chinese Diplomat Sticks Giant Foot In Mouth at U.N.

Not a good day for Sha Zukang, the Chinese diplomat representing China at the U.N. During a U.N. conference dinner, he got drunk, then got up to speak in front of everyone.

His comments on the Secretary-General of the U.N. -- "I know you never liked me, Mr. Secretary-General. Well, I never liked you, either."

His comments on his American counterpart at the U.N. -- "I don't really like him. He's an American, and I really don't like Americans."

He was in the Secretary-General's office the next morning offering his apologies. [sarcasm]Surprisingly[/sarcasm], there doesn't seem to be any coverage of this incident in the Chinese press.

Makes a change from the weasel words normally poured forth at the UN.

Shame he'll be dragged off to the tractor factory.
He'd make a refreshing Sec. Gen.

ETA- Maybe we should get the whole damn bunch drunk and see what emerges.

I have a feeling that Mr.Zukang will not hold this position for long. He is an embrassment for China.

Well, its not his first public misstep, and he's always been kept in the position. Nor, at least thus far, has he been removed. The thing is, he has very strong relationships with a lot of key allies in the U.N....Russia, African nations, Muslim nations, etc. None of them are going to be particularly pissed off at what he said (many will be quietly agreeing with him), and replacing him with someone else who'd have to start from scratch in building those relationships would cause a great deal more difficulty than his comments did.

And a very minor point, but following Chinese convention, the first name is the family name...so he's actually Mr. Sha ;)

I actually wondered about that. In English, Chinese names are given both in the Chinese (Family Name First) and Western (Individual Name First) format.

Yeah, it can get confusing. A good rule of thumb that works 80%-90% of the time...you'll see most Chinese names will have a one syllable name, and a two syllable name. If you see this pattern, then the one syllable name is almost certainly the family name. (If both are one syllable, or more rarely both are two syllables, then its much more problematic)

Emphasizing the impotency of the UN just makes me want to start a business selling "Diplomat-Strength" Viagra to them at a vast markup.
