China reports human case of H10N3 bird flu, a possible first

So long as China's National Health Commission said everything's good...WHO will probably parrot the line concur.
 
“This infection is an accidental cross-species transmission,” its statement said. “The risk of large-scale transmission is low.”
It's probably true. H5 and H7 flu strains have infected humans but otherwise it's H1, H2, H3 strains we see in humans.

H5N1 is still of concern as it could adapt to spreading in humans, it hasn't yet. And we see one H7 strain that causes conjunctivitis in people that has spread around a bit. The rest: H4, H6, H8-16 are never or almost never seen in humans. An H10 in humans is a curiosity, but not something one would expect to adapt to human spread.

No but the reservoir and source have already been identified. Imagine that.

This is H10N3. Other H10 subtypes have been monitored for the last couple decades. An N10H8 has been seen in people before. I didn't recall that because it hasn't been very worrisome as a human pathogen.

IMPORTANCE After the outbreak of avian-origin H7N9 influenza viruses in China, fatal human infections with a novel H10N8 virus were reported. Utilizing data from 12 years of influenza surveillance in southern China, we showed that H10 viruses were regularly introduced by migratory ducks to domestic ducks on Poyang Lake, a major aggregative site of migratory birds in Asia. The H10 viruses were maintained and amplified in domestic ducks and then transmitted to chickens and reassorted with enzootic H9N2 viruses, leading to an outbreak and human infections at live-poultry markets. The emergence of the H10N8 virus, following a pathway similar to that of the recent H7N9 virus, highlights the role of domestic ducks and the current influenza ecosystem in China that facilitates influenza viruses moving from their reservoir hosts through the live-poultry system to cause severe consequences for public health.

H10N3 would be a reassortment that bears watching but not much more.
