Chimera go ahead

Putting aside the ethical considerations for a moment, I wonder if it would be possible in theory to create a centaur or a mermaid?

No, because of how the molecules are, it's only possible to create a taurmaid: horse up top, fish below. Or vice versa, a mertaur, fish top and horse bottom. Unfortunately the latter would be unable to breathe on land but incapable of swimming, so it wouldn't make it in the wild.

I think all this genetic engineering stuff is lame. For proper monsters, I prefer the old fashioned way: grafting robot parts onto existing animals, or using green glowing radiation to mutate things. Messing with cells in petri dishes simply lacks style. Gimme a good old timey roaring mutant bear, with a metal arm and laser eyes, any day. And set that bear in the break room at work. That would liven my day, and do the opposite to many others'.

Hopfully this will lead to lots more research done with stem cells and gene therapy.Great things can be done medically with t-cells and stem-cells but lots more research needs to be done.
This way seems to make it easier and cheaper for the researchers.

Sweet! The world would be a lot cooler place if we had some Chimera's running around, and you all know it. But the first person to create a working Hippocampus (the worst fantasy creation of all time) is getting assassinated by me.

I guess stem cells and all that crap is good too, but let's keep our eyes on the prize people - Chimeras.

The hippocampus is a structure in the brain; a hippocamp is a mythological sea-horse.

Now I was thinking about Mermaids, and I'm pretty sure that it would be much easier to use the tail of a dolphin than that of a fish because a dolphin is a mammal and is therefore physiologically closer to a human.

You can all stop dreaming of mermaids that aint gonna happen.

Actualy there are couple of posible aproaches

This is good news for so many people waiting on medical cures.Lots more research can be done for all different types of illness.

There is a difference between reasearch and reasearch that produces useful results. So far stem cell stuff has tended to fail to be the latter.

I think people nowadays know that they are not going to build a Frankenstein or anything like that.

That one would be fairly trivial. Of more interest is could we come up with a viable ape human chimera. Sheep goat certianly posible.

The hippocampus is a structure in the brain, and a mythical chimera (according to monster manuals across the globe, among other things). Hippocamp is something I've never heard of, but I'm sure that's right too, since they're all made up. Any name ya give it, I hate it more than anything ever created in the history of mankind.

Also - mermaids are too easy, and not nearly as fantastical as I'd like. We need some giant, wild beasts roaming the wilderness with multiple heads and a taste for human flesh (who may or may not have a flame/ice/poison breath).

Closest would be dinosaus. Problem is that you can't just take an existing creater and scale up to any extent.

Yes. His name was Adam. Doesn't anyone read?

I didn't think it was named in the book?

ETA: From wikipedia so take it with a pinch of salt:

...snip...

Part of Frankenstein's rejection of his creation is the fact that he doesn't give it a name, which gives it a lack of identity. Instead it is referred to by words such as 'monster', 'creature', 'dæmon', 'fiend', and 'wretch'. When Frankenstein converses with the monster in chapter 10, he addresses it as 'Devil', 'Vile insect', 'Abhorred monster', 'fiend', 'wretched devil' and 'abhorred devil'.

During a telling she did of Frankenstein, she referred to the creature as "Adam".[citation needed] ...snip...

They already did an ape-human hybrid. They called him Adam Sandler, and let him play the same character in about a hundred movies. We get it. He's a jerk. Ha ha ha.

That jerk makes millions of dollars and ( presumably ) has sex with lots of young ladies..
Ah, how would I be a jerk like him..
