Jack Chick isn't all bad. His story abot a christian rescuing a Muslim after the muslim was beaten nearly to death showed a humane side to this quirky individual. My main objection to this man is his depictions of humans on fire for what I perceive to be minor faults. Religion is a hard pill to swallow especially when so much scientific evidence points in the opposite direction. The illustrations in this one are superb. The textures, the gray tones, the use of ink-and-brush, the realism of the faces and figures are all expertly and intelligently rendered. This is the same artist who drew the anti-Catholic screed, but different from the cartoonist who drew Stinky the Little Devil in the tract about Halloween.
The story here is interesting as well. I find very little to be objectionable here; even as a liberal agnostic I recognize that belief in God (or a god, or gods) can have a transformative effect on one's psyche and emotions. Here the walking hairy terror known as "Bad Bob" finds Jesus after a harrowing near-death experience, and evidently changes his ways for the better. This is not a bad thing.
Taken in and of itself, irrespective of Chick's numerous other profoundly absurd morality tales, I find that this one has a ring of truth even in the midst of its corny, hamfisted melodrama.
Still this man has a talent. Despite the fact that I disagree with most of what he says I find his ability to illustrate his ideas and get his tracts distributed is an accomplishment that I personally cannot do.
