Merged Chick Tracts

It's not the hate that makes him crazy, it's the unbelievably simplistic thinking. Everything's so black-and-white. Good and evil, and the evil knows it's evil and admits to it! Most people outgrow that kind of naivete when they hit five or six years old.

I'm sorry, I now it's a matter of taste, but i find his artwork simply horrible.
But even as a lifelong atheist (well, at least as far back as I can remember) I am, just like you, intrigued by his little tracts.
I am nearly tempted to translate them to Dutch and start spreading them here, see how the response is :D

Everything's so black-and-white.

Some are coloured in. Oh, wait.

Chick infuriates me because there are so many better arguments for Christianity. I might disagree with Aquinas, but I can respect him. I know he wasn't stupid, parroting nonsense born of hate and ignorance. Chick's version of theology demeans his own god by making it all foot-stamping petulance. It's embarrassing. I feel embarrassed for Chick when I read those things, it's like witnessing a mentally ill person rant. Cynic that I am, I even sometimes suspect that Chick is actually an angry atheist and his horrible little tracts are meant as reverse psychology.

Chick does for Christianity what Dr Laura does for counselling.

It actually took me a few more years, I think till around 12 or 13, to outgrow this kind of thinking. I might have been pathological though. In any case, it's still absurd that Chick thinks like this at his age.

I think the images in Doom Town while showing extreme homophobia also show a talent. A sick talent but a talent nontheless. He reminds of a cartoon version of Bosch who painted graphic paintings of hell some centuries ago.

Unless he thinks that way because of his age. He's fairly old, isn't he? My grandparents all started to get a bit wacky as they increased in age. One grandma developed paranoia and accused people of trying to poison her. My other grandma talks nonstop, and my grandpa stopped talking entirely. And the other grandpa believes criminal dwarfs are constantly trying to sneak into his house.

I confess I didn't even know who this guy is. Googled him and found one of his cartoon strips.

Good god. Is this crap intended for children or something? Material like this should be considered child abuse.

I think he doesn't do all the artwork himself any more, but has had "ghost artists" for a while now who draw in the same style.

eta: it's fairly obvious that the cartoonishness is deliberate--the fancier panels with blank-faced Jesus prove he could draw much better, but chose not to on purpose. A sad waste of talent.

As some one who has done volunteer work with the mentally ill*, suggesting Jack Chick is mentally ill is an affront to those who actually are.

In my experience, when patients have been properly medicated and are in a lucid state, many of them show a remarkable level of understanding about their condition and they express profound desires to be better, to be normal. We do not observe such behavior in Jack Chick.

Chick isn't crazy, he's just an %$#hole.

*I was an unpaid volunteer, not a trained professional, take my opinion with a grain of salt

Well, as I said, there is no accounting for taste.
My more educated friends (in this field at least) don't call me a cultural moron for nothing :)

"Abdullah Ab-Du-La"? Seriously? And that Jewish caricature is reaaaaaaaaal subtle, yeah...

Oh,I'm sorry. The subtle Chick tracts are on the next aisle.

Right next to the unicorns and wealthy supermodel nymphomaniacs who are really, really into me.

Many also do not.

I like the idea that God would say, "Annie was right."

Something about that cracks me up.

What's the ACLQ?

According to Chick, Jesus is one vindictive bastard. If you find out you're wrong, there’s no chance to say, “Hey, thanks for pointing out my error.” It’s straight to hell for you.

Who is the man
That would crucify his brother man?
Chick!
Can ya dig it?

Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's hellfire all about
Chick!
Right on.

You see this cat Chick is a bad mother--
Shut your mouth
But I'm talkin' about Chick!
Then we can dig it.

He's a shortsighted man
But no one understands him, but no one.
Jack Chick.

As an illustrator I find the artwork in these tracts to be consistently excellent. This one is hilariously cartoony. The second panel, in which the roller-haired mother bugs out her eyes in horrified disbelief, is priceless. Some of the others, like the anti-Catholic one, are highly realistic and beautifully rendered.

I guess Chick must pay well, because otherwise I cannot imagine how he could convince any sane artist with such prodigious talent to illustrate his lunatic ravings!
