I do remember comments about how Mary has "held back the wrath of God" on many occasions. So he doesn't have to obey her, but he does listen to her, and she can talk him down when he goes on a rampage, basically.

It does appear in Mariolatrous nineteenth century works. Jesus is God, and the child Jesus obeyed his parents, so the following could be written to suggest the efficacy of prayers for the Intercession of the Mother of God

But even that passage you quoted says nothing about God/Jesus HAVING to obey Mary. Just that they choose to. And as noted above, I have seen that reflected in catholic teachings, that God listens to intercessions of Mary. Not because he has to (an omnipotent God doesn't have to do anything, of course), but because he chooses to. One could say something about a lesson of being obedient to your parents and stuff like that.

Liguori I suppose formally adhered to that doctrine, but it is clear that he also permitted his readers to suppose that Jesus (ie God) was constrained by, or at any event invariably obeyed in practice, his mother's commands.
Yet, to content His Mother, He changed the water into the best of wines. How could it be that, against His own predetermined plans, He worked this miracle?

Actually, there was no violation of His own decrees; for although, generally speaking, the time for miracles had not yet come, still from all eternity He had established another decree to the effect that, when His Mother asked for anything, she was not to be refused.

Unsophisticated adherents of the Church presumably understood that to mean that God was for all practical purposes, commanded by his Mum, because an established decree by God from all eternity that something is to be done, even in despite of His own plans, looks pretty solid; and the church permitted them to believe it.
 
Jack had better watch out. Mary is one powerful damn goddess. The CC swears & declares that she's the Mother of God.

I appreciate the compliment, because all I know was what I learned in Catholic school, and the lesson there was that God chose to listen to his mother, because, you know, obeying your mom is a good thing to do.

Little did I appreciate that this was some sophisticated theology.

If you read the New Testament carefully, you'll find that Mary wasn't even a virgin pre-Jesus. In the early passages, there's all this stuff about Jesus' older brother Chuck.
