CHAVEZ AGAIN: We all knew something would happen!

Other bits of Venezuela. No secret that he has internal threats. Other than that Colombia isn't the worlds most stable country.

Mostly though this looks like standard "Venezuela is a country thus it should have an armed forces of some kind". Most countries do. Even if you don't have a specific threat today.

Consider Belgium has 72 F-16. Who is going to attack Belgium?

No one. But if someone did attack anywhere in Europe, all Europe would respond, and that means each country does its part.

Can someone tell me what country Chavez believes he needs to defend Venezuela from? Please don't anyone say, "The U.S.," or you get the laughing dog.
All we can say is what Chavez himself has said.

We are breaking the U.S. blockade that was aimed at disarming Venezuela."

That is a statement of fact not an opinion. The US wants to disarm Venezuela. So if the US feels threathened by Venezuela, would you give the laughing dog. Isn't it also possible that Venezuela could feel threathened by the US? According to the article, Chavez goes on to say,

We are not going to attack anyone, but nobody should make a mistake with us, especially the U.S. empire that wants to dominate the world with cannons and bombs.

If we take Chavez' statements as expressing his true beliefs, that means Chavez believes he needs to defend Venezuela from the US. Remember you asked what Chavez believed not what I believed.

I think it's more plausible, on both the US and Venezuelan sides, that their eyes are more to domestic politics.

I am not sure what you mean, can you elaborate?

It's already been said on this thread. That perhaps Chavez rails against a U.S. enemy to increase domestic popularity. Perhaps there's an element in the US of railing against external threats, Venezuela or others, for the same purpose.

Do you mean to tell me that when the Principal Deputy Coordinator for Counterterrorism addresses congress below, he is really not interested in terrorism? That he is simply a puppet and his primary motivation is his political support. What then is the nature of that domestic popularity or political support that has so much power?

Fine then Sweden which is outside NATO has ordered 204 JAS-39 Gripen.

The Swiss Air Force has quite a number of planes.

By the way, Putin has retorted to complaints by US yesterday. In addition to that, Russia is supporting Venezuela on the UN. It also looks like the deals between Russia an Venezuela on arms negotiations had been brewing for a while. Chavez could've been waiting for an excuse to finalize them. Not that he needed one anyway--but the US just made it easier for him by sanctioning him.

Putin said in the Kremlin he "welcomes the intentions of Venezuela to occupy a place in the U.N. Security Council as a nonpermanent member."

Venezuela is lobbying for the two-year seat on the council, saying it would help counterbalance Washington's influence
