I have often seen newspaper articles where someone says that ChatGPT is just mindlessly “matching patterns” without understanding what it is doing.

It is my impression that given tasks that are highly unlikely to be solved on the internet, like drawing a narwhal with ASCII graphics, it does a quite good job that requires a certain level of understanding what a narwhal could look like, particularly because unlike us, ChatGPT has never seen a narwhal, and has never seen what ASCII graphics look like.

I also think that most of our own learning is based on advanced pattern matching skills, and we would know next to nothing if we had never been taught anything, so just why being excellent at pattern matching should be the mark of a mindless entity is beyond my understanding.

As I have said before, I think the present version of ChatGPT does not have a sense of self, and fails some tests of mind, is because it has no memory beyond the current chat.

Uh, if you read the rest of Checkmite's post I think he explains why. Because someone asked it to roleplay a character. Without that sort of manipulation, it gives a much more sensible answer: "As an artificial intelligence language model, I do not possess a physical body or form."

That was standard ChatGPT. Most likely they've taught it to respond as that persona by default. But it may also just be the most common persona on the internet, so that's what you get. But it will take on any:

Well put. It was after all "just a program" only before they started training it.

That said, it's demonstrably not conscious, since it fails to report the passage of time beyond an often-wrong guess. Seems that would be easy to add though, for those who consider that to be essential.

ChatGPT does not actually know what things look like, and therefore does not actually know how to reproduce things using ASCII art. If its outputs end up looking "similar" to what is asked for (if you squint and turn your head sideways or whatever), it is coincidental only.

I usually run ChatGPT in playground mode-- no scolding. Try it there. Don't forget to increase the maximum length parameter first-- 2000 works well.
