Charles Koch on the Justice System

The notion that people who have a net worth of tens of billions of dollars care more about accumulating even more wealth at the expense of their reputation is pretty far-fetched.
Reputation? These clowns supported Herman Cain for POTUS!

Not all rich people make money the same way. Some make money polluting the world with fossil fuels, some make money by warehousing poor people in prisons. I doubt the the Kochs have much invested in private prisions if Charles is talking about prison sentencing reform.

People can actually get paid to pollute the world with fossil fuels? That's surprising. I would have thought most people would want to use fossil fuels to power machines that raise our standard of living.

So did I, before I found out he was a serial sexual harasser. Of course if he had been a Democrat, I probably would never have found that out.
Exactly, because imagine if Clinton was a Democrat. We'd never have found out about his issues.

What color is the sky in your conservative word?

There is actually another possibility, which is that the Koch brothers have been unfairly demonized by Democrats for purely partisan reasons. It's unsurprising that such a possibility didn't even enter your mind, but it is actually the truth. The Kochs are libertarians, and they almost certainly champion their various causes without regard to the direct economic consequences for themselves. The notion that people who have a net worth of tens of billions of dollars care more about accumulating even more wealth at the expense of their reputation is pretty far-fetched.

This. Libertarian is to politics as atheist is to religion. Go ahead and believe whatever the hell you want, but keep the armed thugs enforcing your views away from me.

Given this interpretation, the left, like the socially conservative right, is festering in their own evil juices, not realizing the awful that they are is inherent to the core of their cherished beliefs.

This outrages most dear readers to hear this about themselves. It can't be true. It can't!

I suppose they were so wrapped up in libertarian zeal that they didn't notice that Cain is a blithering buffoon.

Your example actually provides evidence for my claim. We almost didn't find out. It took digging from Matt Drudge to unspike the spiked Isikoff story, and it took the miracle of some spilled Presidential extract on an unwashed dress to get most people to believe it.

What color is the sky in your conservative word?

If the conservative word you're referring to is "buttinsky" as in "liberals support a buttinsky government," then the color is probably black. It depends on your settings though if you're reading it on screen.

Of course, the sky above your head is transparent and therefore has no color. Sometimes it looks pale blue because of Rayleigh scattering of indirect sunlight, but I don't think it's correct to consider that to be a color property in the usual sense (i.e. absorption of all of the other colors of white light).

ETA: Thinking about it a bit more, I would have to say the sky is actually a very faint red. You can see this at sunrise or sunset.

Herman Cain has a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Master's degree in Computer Science. There is no way he is a blithering buffoon. He has a great sense of humor, however, which can often be mistaken for buffoonery.

That Master's was in 1971, too. Programming back in The Day took no small amount of brainpower.

Herman Cain might be crazy, he's certainly poorly informed on some issues, he might even be a "buffoon" depending on your definition of the term, but he's certainly not stupid.

So, ya, criminal justice system. Perceived inequalities. Billionaire conservative. Growing awareness.

Any opinions about the actual topic?

Since this is in the USA Politics subforum, I thought the topic was the Koch brothers, which includes how and why they've been demonized by Democrats, and perhaps also how and why they've been misunderstood as Republican partisans rather than ideologically consistent libertarians.

If the topic is meant to be our criminal justice system, then perhaps the thread should be in Social Issues and Current Events.

For the record, I think our criminal justice system stinks. Far too much power is given to prosecutors, which can only be partly countered by defendants with the resources to afford a good lawyer. Trials take too long and are too expensive. The penalties are way too high, especially for those who are incarcerated, because most prisons are dystopian hellholes, which look like something out of a Cormac McCarthy novel. And there are too many subjective laws, the breach of which is a matter of opinion and circumstances, to be interpreted in the first instance by a prosecutor whose first allegiance is usually to personal political ambition rather than to the cause justice.

Poor guys. You can't even try to buy elections anymore without being demonized for it.

I'm quite sure that his profound degree of cluelessness about the abortion debate, and about Libya, are not attributable to humor.

The first example is a case of not having thought through the lies he needed to tell because he is obviously pro-choice but needed to be pro-life in order to win the Republican nomination. The second example is a case of not being up to speed on the latest developments in Libya. Neither one was that big a deal, especially for somebody whose focus was on economic issues, and not foreign policy and not irrelevant (at least as far as the President should be concerned) social issues like abortion.

Your proclivity for selective reading rears it's head yet again. Here is the actual topic:

It was you who tried moving the topic to "demonized", in the 3rd post. So please do try and stay on topic.

Politics and the justice system are intertwined, especially with a major influence of politics using his resources to influence the justice system.

Reminds me of a certain lefty poster who is no longer with us that used to regularly refer to Herman Cain as the "pizza boy." Nothing says progressivism like referring to a black man as a boy.

Question: what do you call a black man who has a Masters degree and who was the CEO of a multimillion dollar corporation?

Answer: Pizza Boy

I like the tendentious language here. Exercising one's first amendment rights to advocate for certain governmental policies is either an attempt "to buy elections" or "to influence the justice system" (both of which imply the crime of bribery). Would you speak the same way about a rich Democrat who used his money for similar purposes?

This is a fine example of the pot calling the kettle black. Or perhaps more aptly, the blue jay calling the sky blue.
