This is kind of a remarkable exchange. Count all of the Rule 0, Rule 11, and Rule 12 breaches in there. Remember, my friends, Charles Blow is a columnist for the New York Times. Is he really any better than Sean Hannity on Fox News? I've posted a little bit of the transcript for those who don't want to watch the uncomfortable video.

BRUCE LEVELL: But here is my question since we're on the topic -- since we're on the topic of African-American subject -- that's what we're on, name one [racist] statement that you've heard Donald Trump say about African-Americans. Name one.

DON LEMON: Yes, I've got a short amount of time. Go ahead, Charles.

CHARLES BLOW: No, first of all, I don't know I totally listen to the phrase.

LEVELL: No, no, sir. Exactly.

BLOW: No, no, first of all, be quiet. The way I was being quiet when you were talking. Right? That's how this works.

LEMON: Go ahead, Charles. We're about to run out of time.

BLOW: So, here's the deal.

LEVELL: Name one.

BLOW: Here's the deal.

LEVELL: No, no, name one.

LEMON: Bruce, it's his turn.

LEVELL: You want to talk about race

BLOW: you talk to him.

LEMON: Bruce, let him.

BLOW: Because I won't do that.

LEMON: OK. If he doesn't want to answer your question you don't have to do that.

BLOW: OK. I won't do that. All right.

LEMON: Go ahead, Charles.

LEVELL: Because he can't. That's why. Thank you.

LEMON: Charles, Charles.

BLOW: Who is this person? And why is he on TV?

<snip much, much more>

I can understand why you posted this, and understand why you maybe feel companionship with the poor beleaguered Levell who tried so hard spring his rhetorical get out of jail card of "name one" gotcha question and flopped.

Actually, the real reason I posted it was because of the discussion in another thread where people found it incomprehensible that I would view the New York Times and Fox News as similarly biased. People seemed particularly offended by the opinion hosts on Fox News, but the opinion columnists at the New York Times are just as bad, and in this case, frankly, unhinged.

Sorry, I didn't watch the video. I assume to be compared to Hannity, Blow, at some point, blurted out multiple lies about one of presidential candidates?

I saw that interview. Yeah, I think Blow blew it. Even though it was a gotcha question, it was one that should have been hit out of the ballpark, what with the many instances of Trump's bigotry to pick from.

Opinionists are not why people see Fox as biased. It's that they don't firewall between the opinion and news desks and by very design of the Fox News operation violate several tradionally held standards of journalistic integrity. They have obviously succeeded in their agenda because now even people my age who watch fox regularly appear to be unable to differentiate between opinion and journalism.

Oh, it's a meaningless question but one that seems at first glance legitimate; it's facile.

They specified African-Americans to remove the starkly racist things he's said about 'Mexicans' and people from the Middle East. They specified 'said' to remove all his actions. If one is biased or not paying enough attention, one could say, "Well, see! He didn't say anything racist!" That he has said things racist, but not specifically about African-Americans, and that he has done racist things falls by the wayside.

It's a well constructed straw-man actually. Quite the attempt, but he ruined it by not letting Blow talk. It was clear Blow was not going to give the best answer, which would have been to point out the above.

I hate to see a demographic I treat as a single group argue among themselves. Which one of the black men in that clip was speaking for African-Americans?

The one on the left obviously. The one on the right is an Uncle Tom, and the guy in the middle, well, let's just say he's more focused on black holes swallowing large Malaysian airplanes.

The guy in the middle might be a cyborg. I was getting an "uncanny valley" vibe off him.

I was really hoping they'd be friends and start comparing stories about getting pulled over "while driving black."

Blow sucked on this occasion.

(Somebody had to say it.)

I rewatched it. The only solution is to support the views of the blackest guy in the mix. The Blow fellow is two shades more credible than the other two.
