A coworker who is totally totally in contempt of me (because she is cool and I am not) says she needs to get rid of her cellulite. I told her celulite doesn't exist. She says it's bullsh!t, and it's real. I told her "cellulite" is just regular fatty tissue, it's a term coined to sell overrpiced health care products.

Well I am wrong and she is right and she's so much cooler than me.

But you don't have cellulite, I suggest you keep mentioning that to her in a loud voice whenever there are other people about, that will teach her for being cool. :)

Well, suez, you are smarter, better informed and I think you are pretty darn cool. So in the words the great Fonzerrelli, she can sit on it an spin.

Um, actually, you are right.

Your coworker is wrong, if she suggests that cellulite is somehow different than fat.

Try this link to Quackwatch . A specific quote:
"Cellulite" is not a medical term. Medical authorities agree that cellulite is simply ordinary fatty tissue [1]. Strands of fibrous tissue connect the skin to deeper tissue layers and also separate compartments that contain fat cells. When fat cells increase in size, these compartments bulge and produce a waffled appearance of the skin. Many years ago, Neil Solomon, M.D., conducted a double-blind study of 100 people to see whether cellulite differed from ordinary fat. Specimens of regular fat and lumpy fat were obtained by a needle biopsy procedure and given to pathologists for analysis and comparison. No difference between the two was found.

So, Suez, you are still way cool, and right to boot :)

What Huntsman said. At least, that's what my doctor friend told me, almost word for word, when I asked her what on earth this cellulite was that the Princess Diana watchers were so obsessed with (no it wasn't, it was the pattern of the cloth of the car seat on her leg....)

Rolfe.

Not all areas of the body show the 'orange peel' effect on the skin caused by fat deposits. It is usually on the inner thighs, hips, stomach, arms. You can have fat everywhere but it won't always appear dimpled. Cellulite is the name for the appearance of the skin on those effected areas. At least that is what most women call it. So the co-worker wants to rid herself of the appearance of the skin probably on her inner thighs and butt. They say it is almost impossible to rid oneself of this cellulite and men can have it as well.

While there are some 'lucky' women who can be fat and have no 'cellulite', I have never observed anything more than a minute amount of it in athletic women with low bodyfat levels. How many swimmers have you seen with cellulite ? How many volleyball players ? How many tennis players ?

As usual the answer is here, in front of everyone's eyes, but they don't want to see it.
