CDs shattering in high-speed drives?

Forgot to mention:
Where I work, there was a shipment of prepressed CDs that had a really bad tendency to shatter. The CDs were part of a software package, and were used daily (video/audio media.) Apparently, whoever pressed them had a problem with either material or machine and delivered CDs that all had hairline fractures. The company even told us to not use the CDs and delivered replacements.

I've had that happen twice now. First time was my old, worn-out Civ III cd-rom in my new 48x drive - kaBOOM! Scared the be-jezzus out of me.

The second time was a music disc in my son's school computer. They replaced the whole computer, because of the extensive damage that occured. They said they had never seen anything like that before! lol
