Terror watch - Cat Steven's plane diverted

Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens, performs in South Africa last year.

A plane bound for Washington from London was diverted to Maine today after passenger Yusuf Islam - formerly known as pop singer Cat Stevens - showed up on a US watch list, a federal official said.

United Airlines flight 919 had already taken off from London en route to Dulles International Airport when the match was made between the passenger and the watch list, said Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.

Could they put Jimmy Buffett, Kevin G and Michael Bolton on the watch list? Maybe shoot first and ask questions later? Is that wishful thinking?

I really can't wait for this wierd-ass dream to be over...Schwarzenegger is the governor of California, Cat Stevens is on a terror watchlist, 1/2 the nation is still willing to vote for Bush, all while I'm standing in front of my entire high school class naked.

Shouldn't have eaten that Indian food right before bed.

Is he really worth going on the watch list, and causing massive disruption to all those people, even is his music is terrible?
From the fwiw dept... He spoke in support of the fatwa calling for Rushdie to be killed.

And his music sucks.

Oh, ok. So I'm an old Cat Stevens fan. He has some recent stuff out. Just enough of ol 'Cat' in it to make me miss his voice.

How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
It’s always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there’s a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

I miss Dan Peek from "America" too. Captured by the fundies.
Damn religions.

Cat seems about as dangerous as Ted Kennedy though. Maybe a little less... The stuff about Rushdie was pretty weird but no worse than other religious right nuts like Falwell and Robertson, and they're allowed into the country.

Funny thing is that Muslims represent a key voting block in critical states. Hope they have some pretty convincing evidence, because it looks a lot like more overly enthusiastic Muslim persecution.

Evil & Subersive Islamic Quotes:
Yusuf Islam, the former Cat Stevens, has released a statement vigorously denouncing the terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, D.C.:

"I wish to express my heartfelt horror at the indiscriminate terrorist attacks committed against innocent people of the United States yesterday," Islam said. "While it is still not clear who carried out the attack, it must be stated that no right thinking follower of Islam could possibly condone such an action

Yusuf Islam — the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens — plans to donate a portion of the royalties from his upcoming box set to the September 11th Fund, with the rest going to orphans and homeless families in underdeveloped countries.

"I feel this is my duty," Islam said in a statement from his label. "I hope that this donation will bring some comfort."

The singers listed on the album cover include some of the greatest egos in the history of popular music. Sir Paul McCartney. David Bowie. George Michael. All three answered the call, rushing to record their track for Hope, a collection of songs to raise money for the children of war-ravaged Iraq.

Yet their contribution - and that of younger singers such as Avril Lavigne and Ronan Keating - is overshadowed. What has made news is the performance of singer-songwriter Cat Stevens, who has effectively been in retirement since he converted to Islam in late 1977 and renamed himself Yusuf Islam.

Islam has been back in the recording studio, singing for the first time in English for 25 years. It's not a new song, but the lyric is apt: "Out on the edge of darkness/ there rides a peace train/ Oh, peace train, take this country/ come take me home again."

He wrote Peace Train for a different world in 1971. The new version, recorded while he was visiting Johannesburg, features African rhythms and a South African choir, Incwenga. "Peace Train is a song I wrote, the message of which continues to breeze thunderously through the hearts of millions," says the artist on his website (www.yusufislam.org.uk). "There is a powerful need for people to feel that gust of hope rise up again. As a member of humanity and as a Muslim, this is my contribution to the call for a peaceful solution."

Damn you for beating me to this, AUP.

However, Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam is/was a PEACE ACTIVIST! "Peace Train" ring a bell? He's also a BRITISH citizen!

Some of you bastards like Rikzilla would have put this man squarely in the "hippy-dippy" category in about 2 seconds if he had kept his stage name of Cat Stevens. You'd have been spewing the litany of the anti-left. It's only because of his name change that you'd even lift an eyebrow.

Guess what? Cat Stevens was Muslim when he was Cat Stevens, too. Ride on the Peace Train, bitch. I'm being followed by a FBI shadow - FBI shadow FBI shadow.

Dee Dee De Dum ....Dum de Dum De Dumm Dum .....mmmmm m m m dum de dum de dum dum..........

ok folks, who can guess which CS song that was that I was Humming....

Look, I know his stuff sucks badly when you listen to it today but that was THEN... it was my youth and its full of Cat Stevens memories...

I agree it's stupid to put Cat Stevens on any watch list, but this "peace activist" is also on record for speaking in support of the death threat against Salman Rushdie, praising Saddam Hussein during the first Gulf War, has campaigned in Britian to maintain a ban on homosexuality in schools, and was kicked out of Israel for donating money to Hamas.

He's written some nice songs, I just question his "peace activist" credentials.

The SOB should've been strangled by his own guitar strings 3 decades ago, politics be damned.....Wheres John Balushi when ya need him???

If he is "on record" what records are those? He has denied the Salman Rushdie thing as "out of context"....Hmmmmm, I'm not a great fan of the out of context defence but he has denied supporting threats of murder....seems he is still happy for a government to string up Rushie.

He also denies the Hamas funding thing....got any links on that one?

I would think George bush is also against homosexuality in schools...

SO ALL YOU BASTARDS LAY OFF THE CAT....OK!!!!!

now back to humming a few tunes....Hmmmmm, Hmmmm, Dum de dum....

If the Israeli charges that Yusuf is a Hamas supporter through thousands of dollars of donations are true - yes.

Not that you would believe anything the Israelis claim...

Yusuf has also been rumored for years to be the target of Carly Simon's "You're so vain" song.

:crc:

Screw the watchlist; screw 9/11. The USA does a lot of picking and choosing about who gets to enter. Why should a fanatical zealot who advocates violence, due to a writer's words no less, be allowed in?

(For the record, my opinion of his musical drivel pre-dated the Rushdie thing. Sorry Fool. ;) )

Be that as it may, I always thought that "You're So Vain" was the best thing since that barber who shaves all and only those men who do not shave themselves.

-sigh- Sad to see someone descend from the light of blessed Bohemianism into the dark pit of religious fundieism...

Yeah, the Hamas thing would do it. They are wildly popular among Muslims as a charity group. I presume this means that Saudi Arabia is barred from entering the US?

Lieberman, a strong supporter of Israel, charged that Saudi Arabia is aiding Palestinian organizations, including Hamas.

I doubt you could fit Saudi Arabia on a plane. Even if you only dug down a centimeter, you'd probably need a really big ship or something.

epepke
LOL, I really do apologize; my imprecision must be quite stressful for otherwise literate & intelligent perfectionists.

Saudi Arabia:
Country full of Saudi Arabians and not enough planes planes to hold them all. I hope that corrects my previous error. :p

planes planes
