Waiting for the pod bay door to open.
FORMER Cuban president Fidel Castro said the "Cuban model" of communism no longer works, an apparent admission that the economic policy that underpinned the country's revolution more than 50 years ago had failed. "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore," he told The Atlantic journalist Jeffrey Goldberg in an interview last week. Goldberg published parts of the exchange on a blog.

The former president's candid admission comes amid speculation that the 84-year-old former premier is in seriously declining health.

He handed over control of the country in 2008 to his older brother Raul, who has since passed reforms that loosen the state's hold on the economy.

I found that interesting.

Maybe by "us" he meant his brother and himself? It certainly worked for them for a good length of time.

So that means he'll be hauled off to a gulag soon for "re-education", right?

Sounds like he may have had a little deathbed epiphany.

But the cynic in me thinks he's just trying to polish up his legacy.

Communism never worked anywhere for anyone.

I don't expect we will be hearing anything like "the last 50 years have been a mistake, sorry for the inconvenience".

On the other hand, I'd watch a show "Cooking with Castro", covering Cuban influenced meals on a budget.

His comment implies that it once worked.
We must assume that he believes so. And it might have, according to his ideals. He did get a worker's state, he did stop 'Western decadence', and he did, AFAIK, manage to somewhat limit an earlier rampant corruption.

... Unfortunately, he also managed to freeze the society in a 1950es state, and set the economy on a slow, but steady decline.

Following the admission that persecuting gays was not a good decision, it really feels the old man is trying to save face for his own legend.
Although we all agree those late statements counts for almost nothing in regard to the acts, Fidel Castro has come quite a long way... for a dictator.

It certainly give the impression that the system will not survive its leader, am I mis-guided in thinking this? Although like the PRC this might be change in continuity (or vice-versa)?

We are in agreement

Anyone feel like going back to older Cuba threads and noting who came down on anyone suggesting the Cuban economic system had problems?

. . . yeah. Me neither.

He's just a teensy bit late in coming to this realization.

He also said that Ahmadinejad should stop slandering Jews

He also said that, in hindsight, he shouldn't have asked Khruschev to nuke America during the Cuban missile crisis. I'm glad Khruschev had a different opinion too.
I wonder if castro in quiet pensive moments ever regrets those mass executions he had done when he ran Batista out of Cuba?

"Sorry. Turns out I don't know **** about economics. Probably should have mentioned that earlier."

DAmned if he did (see above) but damned if he had not do ("hard core communist until his end never recanting his error").

IMHO the fact the he did admit it is quite an enormous progress.

Now if the US could stop the stupid embargo...
