Apparently the initial excitement about Caroline Kennedy is starting to wear off, and people wondering what exactly she has going for her other than her last name. One should presumably judge a person on content rather than verbal tics, but it seems the former wasn't up to much either:

Caroline Kennedy's latest attempt to press her case to be the replacement for Hillary Clinton as a senator for New York has been widely criticised in the US media.

Ms Kennedy - daughter of former President John F Kennedy - broke weeks of silence on her bid, by giving a series of interviews at the weekend.

But she was criticised for being unknowledgeable on key policy areas, being unable to articulate why she was seeking public office for the first time - and even for possessing a verbal tic.

Under the headline "Caroline Kennedy no whiz with words", the New York Daily News mimicked Ms Kennedy's speech pattern during the round of interviews.

"Caroline Kennedy, you know, might need, you know, a speech coach, um, if she, you know, wants, um, to be a senator," the paper said.

Totting up the number of "verbal tics" during its 30-minute interview, the paper counted "you know" more than 200 times... and added that "'um' was fairly constant, too".

Asked if President George W Bush's tax cuts on the wealthy should be repealed immediately, Ms Kennedy replied: "Well, you know, that's something, obviously, that, you know, in principle and in the campaign, you know, I think that, um, the tax cuts, you know, were expiring and needed to be repealed," the paper reported.

Columnist Michael Goodwin wrote: "The wheels of the bandwagon are coming off. Fantasy is giving way to inescapable truth. That truth is that Kennedy is not ready for the job and doesn't deserve it. Somebody who loves her should tell her."

You can sure sense the decline of a dynasty. Old Joe and Rose wouldn't have stood for that sort of performance, I think. While it doesn't, probably, affect her ability to think, it shows a certain lack of care, particularly in preparation. ABC does not make unsubstantiated smears: they report that Palin inquired about banning books (true) and fired and then reinstated the librarian (she asked for a letter of resignation from the librarian). They did not report the bogus list of banned books, which AFAIK did not make it to the MSM. If it did, you haven't demonstrated it.

Palin abused her power, as an independent investigator found. For the most part the MSM reported the facts from the case. It is for the listeners to decide whether this was an abuse of power or not. Do you have any specific allegations reported in the MSM that were false?

Again, this is a matter of opinion. There is no "yes" or "no" answer to this one. There are certainly people on both sides of the aisle that think she was poorly vetted, and IIRC people like the chair of the RNC who claim they were never contacted.

Really? It must depend on the politics of the people being interviewed by AP as to what constitutes a "verbal tic" and what is just normal speech.

There is no excuse for AP to take it upon themselves to make Caroline appear less of an oaf than she actually is. Even if the AP removed 95% of the "You Know's" just for space purposes, there is no excuse to completely disguise the personality of the women, as stale as it is.


The National Enquirer's scoops The New York Times, Newsweek and Time. These other media sources gave into sensationalism and tabloid journalism decades ago. Even Camelot Caroline cajoled the reporters from the NYT's for asking "Women's Magazine questions." While the NE makes errors, so do the other supposed paragons of journalism integrity.

Are any of those stories on that NE website inaccurate? Do you think the NYT won't have a story on Jet dying? Or do you just have a problem with their headlines? They sure had Senator Edwards dead to right.
