Cancel culture IRL

I'm curious why the freak out about what amounts to a survey that hasn't even been done yet.

If any one is interested, here's the actual bill:
https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2021/233/BillText/er/PDF

As a related topic... here's a report from FIRE regarding the censoring and topics by University of Oklahoma.
https://www.thefire.org/stop-talking-right-now-university-of-oklahoma-training-shows-instructors-how-to-censor-indoctrinate-students/
Fairly early in the training, Pyron Alvarez addresses the potential reluctance faculty members might have toward putting a heavy hand on student speech. “One of the fears is that we’re going to get in trouble for this, right?,” she says. “Like we can’t tell students that they can’t say something in class. But we can! And let me tell you how.” (17:45)

Pyron Alvarez’ fellow workshop leader Kasey Woody later goes into some detail on how instructors can “steer” students away from “problematic territory” to accomplish this. (46:01)

“I, in this case, usually look for my students who might be, like, entertaining the idea of listening to a problematic argument. Then I say, ‘we don’t have to listen to that.’” (45:45)

The time stamps are for this training video that prompted FIRE's response. It is also linked to at the beginning of the article, as well as being linked below:

Nice to see cancel culture hard at work in NZ.

Bad Charlie, legally marrying young women!

Considering that two of them were 16, an age that would not only need parental consent, but court approval in NZ, I wouldn't refer to them as young women.

Besides Buster Keaton was funnier, and while his personal life was as big a mess as Chaplin's, at least he only married a 22-year old when he was 45, not an 18-year old at 53.

New Lego set renames Boba Fett's "Slave 1" starship to generic "Boba Fett's Starship" which is the greatest injustice in the history of the world since a character with Tumblrhair was added to the franchise according to Star Wars fans that I'm not sure exist.

https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/disney-lego-rename-boba-fett-slave-1-ship-star-wars/

Disney had, some time ago, done the same with ‘slave Leia’. She was briefly rename ‘Huttslayer’, but now any licenses are simply not permitted to create any work with that outfit.

Disney rounding off any of the sharp corners, as is their way. It's hard to get up in arms about it after all the retconning and terrible sequels that Lucas was responsible for. Disney is going to turn the IP into a benign, family friendly money making machine that is devoid of all soul, but what's new?

Well screwing the authors out of the residuals of their creations is kind of new. Disney figures they bought all the assets of lucas film but none of the obligations to the creators

I'm almost certain neither of the weddings were in NZ, and you can still get married in UK without parental consent at 16.

The age of legal consent to sex is the general dividing line, and since most enlightened countries set the bat at 16, I'm comfortable with the description.

Maybe you should cancel the muslins - Mo married a which who was 9. That's definitely a child, and let me know how you get on.

Would they have needed parental consent in 1942 and prior?

The only change in those years in NZ is that parental consent was required for people aged 16-21.

I'm off to cancel myself, given that I married a 17 yo in 1975.

I was also having sex with a 16 yo in 1986, when I was 27. I must be at least as bad as Charlot, so my opinion won't count anyway.

Husbands also had complete control over their wives; lives, money, and even whether or not to beat them, up to 1975, so any man still alive who married before 1975 needs to be cancelled as well.

No, the only ones that need to be cancelled are probably the ones that took advantage of the situation to control their wives or **** teenagers in high school while in their late 20's.

Well I don’t feel obligated to buy the products or services of anyone who has beaten their teenage wife no matter what year it occurred and would try and find an alternative competitor to use as soon as I could. I encourage all of you to do the same.

Damn, just committed a cancel.

The power in English of simple alliteration: "Cancel culture!"

It doesn't have to mean anything. The alliteration combined with four simple syllables is enough to give it living currency with the mindless class.

Lucky the one I mentioned left school at 15 or I would have to cancel myself!

:dl:

Why should someone who doesn't break the law be cancelled? The only thing I can take from that is "My morality dictates who should be cancelled" which is a neat replacement for religion.

Meanwhile, the end result of cancel culture is showing at Brandeis University.

Strangely, only reported by right-wing media: https://www.foxnews.com/us/joyce-carol-oates-brandeis-oppressive-words-picnic-you-guys

Yet, it's happening every day.

I suppose we should just ignore it?

I argued against "trigger warnings" as utter bulldust when that term arose, so I hope you can gauge my amusement at "trigger warning" being cancelled.

Things like cancel culture should be dealt with the same way as religion - either comedically or derisory, never seriously.

Some former(?) wrestler recently apologized for being on a Joan Rivers show almost a decade ago and insulting Chyna (if you don't remember, Chyna was an ultra-muscular woman who looked like a man). Anyway, I love this fake apology:

“I want to apologize for a comment I made over 8 years ago on Fashion Police. I am sorry and embarrassed by my 29 year old self, who offended Chyna and in turn, hurt her family and others. I wish I could take it back. Please learn from me, it’s not worth hurting someone’s feelings for a meaningless laugh. Chyna will always be remembered as an icon and pioneer who helped create the opportunities for women in wrestling that exist today. Thank you Chyna! – Nikki Bella”

This performative apology hits a lot of the right notes. While apologizing be sure to remind everyone the incident occurred over eight years ago, and that you're sort of apologizing on behalf of your similarly deceased 29 year-old self. People clearly change. Second, for those who don't know, inform them that it occurred on a catty TV show where this behavior was commonly accepted -- subtly reminding everyone that the people hearing your groveling apology happily watched and laughed at the beyond-dumb program. Third, apologize to everyone, not just the dead person. After all, anyone could have happened upon this clip from the past and been hurt. It's almost as bad as Gina Carano's "dangerous racism." Fourth, frame it as a teachable moment; we can ALL learn from your 29 year-old self's mistake from eight years ago. Fifth, praise the dead person you wronged and thank her for blazing a trail to follow (and serving as a warning for injecting massive quantities of male hormones).

The Daily Mail has the complete list

The inclusion of picnic is hilarious, Americans thinking they own the concept of public exicutions ?

Trigger warning: Graphic violence.

I've written to Brandeis University with the demand that they cancel the phrase "in spades" to their list as well as prohibit the presence of playing cards on their campus. Let's see if they'll go for it.
