Hey, if firing a bunch of racists and sexists is what it takes for unionization to finally take off in the US, it'll be all worth it.

Don't hate the player, hate the at-will employment game.

And yet... they're not terminating their relationship with Dr. Dre, so....

Yep. I can totally see how a hyperbolic paragraph in a book is way, way, way worse than "Bitches Ain't ****". So obvious.

Yes, people who are guaranteed to make a company hundreds of millions of dollars are treated differently than ground-floor new hires.

Also, water is wet.

Essentially, you're arguing that blatant and outright demeaning sexism is acceptable as long as it's from someone who makes them a lot of money... but a mildly hyperbolic paragraph in a book several years prior makes employees legitimately feel "unsafe" and therefore is a good, solid, well-thought out reason to terminate someone.

I thought they had already moved from "Beats by Dr. Dre" to "Beats by Bose". Either way, Apple bought the Beats brand for billions. That is not a relationship that turns on a dime.

I know he worked at Apple for a bit after the sale of the Brand, but I have no idea if he is still working with Apple at all.

It's still officially "Beats by Dre." He did work for years at Apple after the sale and is still the face of the brand. In 2016 Apple produced a semi-autobiographical TV show starring Dre called Vital Signs but Tim Cook refused to distribute it due to graphic content.

A guy who has actually beaten at least one woman in the past and been credibly accused of (and kinda sorta admitted to) domestic violence -along with his highly misogynistic (and homophobic, BTW) raps- is still heavily associated with Apple.

I think there's something wrong there, no? Martinez is fired for the relatively tame stuff in his memoirs; Dr. Dre has had a decade+ long relationship with the company. How did those concerned Apple employees ever miss that?

Cannot find any skepticism-resistant records to that effect, post-2015.

ETA: I'm okay w/ Apple working w/ Dre. No one should be held to lyrics or poetry they wrote more than a decade ago.

ETA2: Then again, I don't get the "progressive" movement tryna get people sacked for wrongthink.

Because nobody involved actually cares about sexism or any other ism.

Right. I think this is all about virtue signaling and making meaningless public gestures in that pursuit.

Cancel culture IRL in other words.

The Beats website: https://www.beatsbydre.com/

The About Us page: https://www.beatsbydre.com/company/aboutus

As of today, he is still the face of the brand, even if he may not be actively involved in it anymore.

It does look like was an employee for some time and Apple did respond to criticism at the time of the acquisition.

But, I can't find anything noting that he would be actually managing Apple employees.

An employee may or may not mind their company using Dre to sell headphones, but I suspect more would mind if they turned up and found their career in the hands of Dre, their new boss. It is a different sort of relationship.

Maybe they should. Feel free to write a letter

The Sacco case had that in spades. A joke obviously at the expense of privileged white folks is taken as anti-black.

He said spades! Cancel him! And ignore his message because no matter what it is, it couldn't be worth listening to!

But, in all seriousness, I actually just chimed in to comment on that case. I did find that one to be one of the most bizarre cases of all, because it was, indeed, very obvious, that the intent of the joke was exactly what you say. She made and extremely PC sort of joke, and ended up cancelled for being racist.

The Elect is John McWhorter's term, mentioned earlier I think. In his words, the mean woke. For him woke is acknowledging that racism is still a thing that still has negative consequences while the elect are the ones that think you basically have to agree with them about those consequences and the fixes and will call you names as a result.

What a misleading term. They are not chosen, thus not elected. Parroting misleading terms does not improve your writing, even if you cite the source.

I am not very familiar with McWhorter's writings, but I'm pretty sure I know what he means by The Elect.

Among Calvinists, including the Puritan settlers of Massachusetts, who believed in predestination, The Elect were those predestined for Heaven. People among The Elect of course still had to follow the rules, but they sort of did that naturally. It was their destiny to be righteous.

Wait is this just more "You didn't cancel everyone, ergo you can't cancel anyone!" nonsense?

It's worth knowing which cancellations fit the pattern of justification, if only to constrain future behavior.

ETA: #3134 reasonably distinguishes between Andre and Antonio, IMO.

Oh yeah, well I found one of your posts convincing, too. I just can't remember which one, you show off.
