Canada's Lib-Dems?

I think we need to equalize the number of senators for each province because it equalize provinces with the lower populations with central Canada. The current system gives a big bias towards Ontario and Quebec.

Allowing the two parties might be good if get rids of Jack Layton.

Canada has more in common with Yugolsavia than with a fellow British Commonwealth country that has the same system of government? Give your head a shake. NZ's reforms were made for precisely the reasons that ours are being discussed. Their solutions are relevant to us. War, genocide and forced balkanization patrolled by the UN are not. Get real.

The history of New Zealand is not comparable to ours. We are not talking about Yugoslavia's break-up but the entire history of the political entity. We have linguistic and cultural distinctions here among regions that New Zealand does not have.

PR is only championed by extremists? Please. It has been discussed and studied at the highest levels of government and at the behest of government. Like here for example. There have been several referendums on it at the provincial level. It's coming in some form, sooner or later.

What is your point? That study agrees with me and disagrees with you. It explains perfectly that those who don't like our system are among those who feel themselves disenfrancished or, otherwise, are simply extremists:

Why did so many neglect to vote?

....

Small wonder many felt disenfranchised and opted out next time around. It's the same dynamic that tends to make liberal-leaning federal voters apathetic in Alberta, where the Alliance has a perpetual stranglehold.

It doesn't occur to the baffled Globe and Mail columnists that the extremist minority in Alberta remains unelectable because they're horrible campaigners. I have spent a lot of time campaigning against Prop Rep in both Alberta and British Columbia because bad electoral strategy and unpopular platforms do not warrant success or compensation.

And no, it does not serve the interests of all Canadians to be governed by social conservatives and fundamentalist christians who are at the fringe of Canadian civil society and whose party lacks the support of ~70% of voters. It would serve the interests of all Canadians if representation in parliament was proportional to the preferences of the voters. Then all voices could be heard, and coalition and/or cooperation would be the norm.

So...it's not the system you disagree with but simply the current government. Here's a positive suggestion: Get out there and vote next time. Sitting around and whining about things on an obscure internet forum won't help your boys out next time.

On a larger scale, get those who allowed the BQ to get a stranglehold on both the elites and the working class in Quebec to vote for whatever party you think is better than the one the rest of us find satisfactory to our needs and ambitions.

Should I take the above to mean you'd register no discontent whatsoever if the Liberals, NDP, and BQ decided to form a coalition government and unseat the current Conservative minority govermnent? That would be, after all, only doing what the system allows.
