Bush Wins!

Congratulations President Bush.

For the sake of the country that I truly love, I honestly hope your second term isn't nearly as disastrous as your first.

Makes you wonder how many jobs one has to lose, how many soldiers have to die and how much debt one can rack up before the people say enough.

People voted out of fear. People voted because of their religious convictions. Oh well, I have to face the fact I don't share the views with the majority of this country.

In a way, I'm glad I don't share the views with the majority. Pop used to tell me 80% of the world are idiots. That might have been a "conservative" estimate.

Anyway, you're correct above. And the one plus I see is that the Bushies can't blame the previous president in four years after Dubya messes things up even worse.

You exposed that you can't use Google.

Dr. Hager is on the FDA commision that oversees approval of drugs. He's an OB/GYN who believe that women should pray to relieve menustral cramps among other things.

Hormonal birth control methods are The Pill, Depo-Provera/Lucenelle, The Patch, NuvaRing, some IUDs, and Norplant, all of which work by preventing ovulation and/or thicken the cerivcal mucus to prevent sperm from fertilizing the egg. The lining of the uterus also doesn't thicken as much, which is part of the reason that some pharmacists have refused to dispense The Pill. Many anti-abortionists see The Pill in particular as an abortifcant.

Ok, that explains why I didn't know what you were talking about; I thought you must mean some new contraceptive device that was under attack from some quarter or other. Because the issues you raise are not ones I find at all pressing, I don't follow them. (My own position is one of pragmatic opposition to prohibiting first trimester abortions, pills, devices and etc.)

Look, birth control and legal abortion are here to stay. Roe was reaffirmed in most of its holdings in, I think it was, '93, by SCOTUS. The odds of that issue being reviewed again by SCOTUS are very, very low. The odds of a reversal much lower still, and EVEN IF that happened, it would simply kick abortion law back to the states, and few of those would totally restrict abortion. (But they are not going to get the opportunity.)

Many who supported Bush's re-election are lawyers who are pro-choice, like Glenn Reynolds (Instapundit). Others are simply well-informed, libertarian-leaning pro-choicers, like Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs or Bill at InDCJournal. They are representative of a lot of us, and we all understand that Bush is not a threat to legal abortion; moreover, he does not wish to make that an issue. He simply had to placate that part of his base, but he will give them only tokens and words.

The far more worrisome issue is gay marriage. When Massachussetes' S. Ct. did what it did, I was less than happy because I was certain the issue was premature by about a half a generation. It had the effect of galvanizing the anti-gay sector and last night they won 11 state referenda.

Attitudes toward our gay citizens have become infinitely more enlightened in my lifetime, but the evolution was not far enough advanced for the marriage issue to have been introduced. My great fear is that state constitutions will now prohibit same-sex marriage and repealing those amendments will be much more difficult than would have been passing same-sex legislation in 10-15 years hence.

You're more brave than I. I wouldn't have put any money on it.

Yeah, I guess. I called it last summer actually. I just couldn't see the country going for Kerry. I knew it was always gonna come down to foreign policy.

What was disastrous about the first term? Look at the facts. Bush clearly inherited a recession and guided the economy through one of the mildest recessions on record, which is even more remarkable when considering that the stock market went down big, due to an investment bubble.

Jobs lost? Not if you look at the household employment survey where jobs were actually gained! There are many more self-employed people today (called the E-bay economy) who do not show up on the more often quoted employment survey.

Soldiers have to die? Well, if you recall, we were attacked first! Do a google search on the words "Salman Pak" and then tell me that we shouldn't have invaded Iraq.

Debt racked up? The deficit is actually small when compared to GDP, as it should be compared to. Smaller than in the Reagan years. Saying the deficit is big is like saying that if James Randi gets wealthier and buys a new house, he would be irresponsible because he has the highest mortgage debt in the history of the generational Randi family.

Voted out of fear? Perhaps fear of getting blown up. But more importantly, people are realizing that the tired, old democratic policies just don't work anymore.

Well You know what they say...........Be careful what You ask for.

Look for the gloves to come off in Iraq and the jaundiced eye of Sauron..err Bush to turn toward Iran.

OK which one of You Aussies are gonna sponsor me for immigration?
