THe main reason for a Democratic debacle is the Economy. Recovery is very slow. If we in a major recovery, we would not even be having this discussion.
I agree that short memories and impatience are a major flaw that we Americans have, though.
As for the 24 Hour new cycle and the eternal polls, they favored the Democrats for the past two years. Sooner or later things would shift and they would favor the other side.

If Bush is now so beloved, why aren't Republicans using "Lets return to the wonderful Bush years" in their campaigns?

It's unfortunate, but it seems that Bush's best work (his attempts at developing guest worker status) was overlooked.

The closest thing I can think of is the Miss Me Yet? sign or youtube conservatives lamenting "anti-American" Barrack Obama and exalting Bush for his great Patriotism or the like. :rolleyes:
