I'm reasonably good at math, but math requires well-defined numbers, not metaphorical stories. 6 days X 1000 years_per_day = 6000 years. That is math. 1 day = "whatever I want it to be". That is not math.

Lots of things are periods of time. That doesn't mean that periods of time are interchangeable.

But since we are on the subject of the flexible length of years, what do you think of the biblical claims of people like Methuselah who was reported by the bible to have lived over 900 years? Are those the kinds of years we use now, or are we doing some more "math" here?

I know what you are saying. I've encountered this particular argument many times. It was an illogical argument then and it still is.

And I'm still available to discuss the geological accuracy of Genesis if you like, but I promise you, it won't go well for you if you're trying to defend Biblical inerrancy.

But before you start, try to remember this one very important point:

Metaphoric is the opposite of literal.

But Genesis wasn't written in English. The English word "day" may have multiple meanings but the Hebrew word "yom" from which it was translated refers only to a 24 hour period.
