The battle between the matador and the bull was resolved in favour of the bull here. I have no particular position, as a non vegetarian, but generally oppose any sport where the idea is to entertain at the animal's expense, including catching and releasing fish. I see this as a social issue for a thread, not sporting, due to the social behaviour of the sadistic crowd.

Yeah, that's exactly my opinion. I oppose entertainment at the expense of animal suffering.

This happens from time to time in Spain. The fact that sometimes these events are broadcast live makes it a bit gameofthroneish, in that it's unexpected and with lots of gore. Kind of snuffish, too.

Boy, it has everything.

Today I learned that my image of what is involved in bullfighting was completely wrong. Apparently my knowledge of what was involved in bullfighting consisted solely of the first part of 1/3 of a bullfighting "match". Thus I was about to post on this thread that I didn't think bullfighting was really about causing suffering to the animal, and certainly seemed more humane than American rodeo bull riding which involves electric shock. Then I read the article and saw that bull rarely survive bullfighting, and thought to myself "How could an event that consists solely of a bull charging at a piece of cloth over and over possibly lead to the bull's death?". Then I looked up Spanish Bullfighting on Wikipedia, and learned my error. Feels like some holdover from Roman arena fighting.

I know Bullfighting is brutal and cruel - I don't dispute it in any way. Nevertheless, it is one of the most morally-beautiful sports ever conceived. I mean, once someone really understands the messages behind the sport....they've come a long way to learning how to figure out and solve life's biggest problems.

Look past the blood and gore...and see the Moral Lessons!

Are you serious??? Roman gladiator fights were more sporting than this ****. Spanish bullfighting is just ritual killing of a bull in front of a bunch of sickos. If you enjoy it, why not just go hang out at the nearest slaughterhouse and get your kicks without any risk to humans.

All I see are immoral lesions. Could you list those moral lessons for my edification?

It's not supposed to be sporting. It's supposed to be a ritualistic slaughter - "Styilistic", in fact!

Think about it. THINK! Quit charging into it like some dumb bull!

Anyways...I saw it twice in Mexico in the 1980's....Beautiful Performances. During the Second time I went, it occurred to me what I was watching and all the blood and gore didn't seem to matter any more....it was the moral lessons being demonstrated that mattered. After that, I never had the desire to watch it again. I got the lessons.

Also, I think you could also use all the old film stock to show people the fights.....it's excellent...and there's no reason ya' can't learn the lessons from watching old video. So...I don't think that whacking these poor animals is necessary anymore. I think its a waste. It's quite Cruel and needlessly Brutal.

I absolutely will not....for then it would be "Free" lesson. And hardly anybody respects what is "Free" regardless of how valuable it may be.

Beep, beep.

It's kind of sad that the bulls have to die. But then again... tenderloin, brisket and ribs. Just sayin'. Silver lining.

Plus...the local Mouth-breathers undergo a cathartic episode as a result of all the bloodletting.

It's all good.

Bull fighting, soccer hooliganism - there's no use trying to understand Europeans and their nutty sports-related violence. Beef. Beef is the language we speak in the US. Kill 'em and grill 'em.

I will say one thing for the fallen hero though. It takes a lot more machismo than I can muster to prance around in those Liberace duds when a bull is out to get his goring on. At least they have the good graces not to make the bull dress all pansy.

Europe, who needs it? It's just gonna get in the way when we attack Russia. Better to sink it into the ocean now.

Hey...your going to go blind acting that way.

We are not going to attack Russia, and they are not going to attack us!

And you must think Europe is much weaker than it really is!

You amaze me.

Hey..go wrap yourself in the American Flag and play a Garth Brooks 8-Track and proclaim yourself a winner!

I just watched that - go El Toro!

Nothing pleases me more than a scumbag animal torturer being put to death by one of the animals he's torturing.

As a resident in the country, let me simply add my voice to the total rejection of animal cruelty. There is a 'fiesta' here in one town where residents pursue and slay a bull with lances, on foot or horseback. Every year when it comes around I just want to vomit. Valladolid is referred to by many of the rest of us as "Fachadolid," or Goosestep Junction.

Fighting the bull with pics and sword is a very unequal fight. The bull nearly always loses, so where's the contest? It is certainly very little show of the matador's cojones, with very little chance of this sort of revenge unless he is very unlucky or very careless.

Instead, if you REALLY want to show what huge cajones you do have, why not try bull-leaping instead - recordatores. No picadors, no sword, just you and the bull and a good chance of getting hurt of you are not really good. And the bull walks away unhurt and honour intact.
