Story

I first heard about this while it was going on. I tried in vain to get any decent information, but Katie Curic and her friends were too busy trying to stick it to the Bush administration to be bothered with the story.

Finally I got a link with more information.

The lead character in this story, Marvin, apparently got screwed over by a city zoning and was hit with some fines. I get the feeling the fines were in retaliation for Marvin's refusal to comply with the regs? The thing is, Marvin sealed himself inside the bulldozer before his rampage. Marvin was "breaking even", he was going to pay back those S.O.B.'s and then kill himself. When the story broke, I had a feeling it would end like this, it just had that "Lone Rider of the Apocalypse" feeling to it.

The story makes him out to be kind of nuts and a sore loser because he didn't get his way. I have a feeling there's more to the story than that.

But he knew how to make compound armor, and that's what's important. Heavy sheet metal sandwiching a layer of concrete. Remember that for when you want to go on a destructive spree someday.

Another rampage in Colorado. Clearly heavy earth moving equipment must be banned. For the children.

Poor guy came unhinged.

Nobody got hurt. The whole thing's kinda funny, in my opinion.

Except the part when he blew his brains out, unfortunately. That ain't cool.

That's a lot of frigging work to go nuts!

Reminds me of the tank incident in San Diego.

Yeah, but that guy could have really killed someone. He flattened parked vehicles.

Not that a bulldozer wouldn't kill you, but at least he picked a day when they weren't inside working.

Actually, public servants don't work at all, any day of the week. So not to cheer a criminal, but I say.... Well done! You showed them!

Well, I'm sure if you have a hydraulic car lift and a heavy bulldozer ready to go, getting some sheet metal and concrete bags (especially when the concrete place was practically next door) seems a trifle.

The guy was probably experienced at welding, owning a muffler shop & all, and had some winches and such for heavy lifting on hand.

We may never get the whole rest of the story about what all led up to this guy blowing a fuse. I'm surprised there isn't a lot more video of it.

I'm sure there are lots of other ways to make armor, too. Overlapped layers of welded steel pipes, off the top of my head.

I'm curious why a muffler shop owner had such a large bulldozer. You usually don't see those exept on construction crews or very large farms.

More video? It's Colorado... they just got touch tone phones last month :p

According to the story this guy kind of went out of his way not to physically harm anyone. If you can call it that when you rampage a bulldozer through a town. He just want to mow down several buildings.

There have been a few times when I've felt like levelling a DMV office. I think it's odd that he didn't have just one target, he had a list.

Once you go to the trouble of buying (or leasing) the 35 ton bulldozer and armoring it against SWAT bullets, you probably have something more planned than to knock over a shed, squish a car and just give up.

For me, just building it would have been therapy enough. I'd have sat back and marvelled at what I'd constructed, had a good laugh and never used it.

A bulldozer that size is a bugger to drive when you have a clear view. I can't imagine what it was like peeking out through a couple of gun turret slits and trying to drive.

It must have torn up the streets pretty good with the tracks.

Did he really top himself at the end? Reports I read had some cop jump on top of the thing and shoot at him through the viewing ports. To me, that seems a bit of an overkill - what's wrong with just dropping in a teargas grenade or two? Or even a flash or stun grenade?

Also, how fast could a heavily laden beast like that go anyway? I expect normal people could outrun it or dodge it easily enough, so they should have been safe.

Otherwise it sounds like he was living out more than a few people's dreams... Pity it ended like that though.

Well, I know the San Diego tank thief was shot by police. The story I read said the dozer had been inert for some time, and the SWAT team cut a hole to look in and he was dead. They were still waiting to get a crane to hoist the armor off as of that writing.

Australian news reported the guy was shooting at people from inside the tractor....any truth in that one??

It wasn't funny.

Police potentially put their lives on the line because the guy was obviously out of control, in charge of a massive vechicle, was running into things, and had guns mounted on it.

To be fair, I think we should mention that most fines are imposed due to failure to comply with the regs... :D

The police said 'He didn't appear to be trying to hit anyone.', but yes, he was armed and was firing out of his tank.

Well go pout in the corner and cry, if it wasn't funny to you. Some of us have a life and don't care.
