Building the WTC

I personally always thought that rebuilding the towers (reengineered with new technologies of course) would've been the perfect "f*** you." It would be like saying "you can knock us down, but we'll jump right back up."

I agree, that idea probably would have got my vote. I gather one of the designs was for two buildings that looked externally the same as the old towers, but were construction wise quite different.

Either way, I think the "put it back the way it was" or "newer, better, more symbolic" approach is spot on.

Yep, the wonderful Twin Towers II as it was known, taller than the originals and structural safer, but with the same facades. The design had them built several yards east of the originals' footprint and a museum would be on the complex.

You have a point though, the Freedom Tower and the new complex is symbolic of a newer and better New York coming back from disaster. And the tallest part of the Tower does face the harbor, so it might as well be "flipping the bird". :D I just wish the construction wasn't mired in such controversey, but then I suppose, what's politics without controversey.

Awesome article.

"The thickness of the plates and grade of structural steel varied over the height of the tower, ranging from 36[48] (260 to 670 MPa)"

...ranging from 36 ksi to 97 ksi ?

That is correct. The bulk of structural steel used was A36 or similar mild steel, but high strength steels were used in some areas, particularly the perimeter columns, with strengths up to 100 ksi. This allowed the perimeter columns to keep the same cross-section at every height, even with the number of perimeter columns reducing by 2/3 below Floor 7. It's a fairly unusual feature of the Towers. See NIST NCSTAR1-1 for details.

Personally, I’d have liked it if they’d gone with that.

I think the new designs look damn cool... and the symbolic nature of the Freedom Tower is the perfect balance of resolute defiance and "flipping the bird" (as I understand the American phrase to be) at terrorists everywhere.

I think that this proposed rebuild more accurately reflects "flipping the bird"... and it would work aesthetically, too :D

update

Update:

This article is scheduled to be on the main page of Wikipedia on Tuesday (starting Monday evening for folks in the U.S. and Canada). This means I'll be on the computer most of the day removing vandalism, including the inevitable "JEWS DID WTC" and other nonsense.

I'm currently working on the 7 World Trade Center article on Wikipedia, tweaking the collapse section of the page, adding more information and more sources.

PS - When I signed up last September, I did not want to submit personal information via the usual sign-up process, so the mods accommodated me and gave me my previous user name. Now, I have a new username here. :)

Article was on the main page today. It's now past 0:00 GMT, so we already switched over to the next day.

http://tinyurl.com/3d6gtn - page history for today

Just want to say I'm amazed at how little vandalism happened to the article today. Some "articles of the day" are vandalized dozens of time each hour, with Tuesdays often the worst day of the week for that. So, I'm very pleased that today was a good day.
Possible that 7 World Trade Center will be the next article in the series to be featured.

Wtc7

Possible that 7 World Trade Center will be the next article in the series to be featured.

The Wikipedia article on WTC7 passed scrutiny and is now a "featured" article. There are 1,614 such articles on Wikipedia, and have written three of them now.

It was important to get this article up to high standards, since it (and debunking911.com) are the only reasonable things that come on the first page of google search of "wtc7". Wouldn't have been possible without all that I've learned from JREF, so big thanks to people here. Also, had help from other users on Wikipedia.

I'm not sure what the next article will be, but will be working on more.

I agree with you and Donald Trump on that design. With the proposed freedom tower going up, its really going to transform the city in more ways than just one. I really don't like the design of the freedom tower either.

Great work, Kryptos! :clap::clap::clap:

I don't think I need to start a new thread for each Wikipedia article. Can keep posting here, requests for help and stuff.

Wikipedia has something called "Featured topics", which could be done for 9/11 articles - maybe just the WTC and then hijacker articles be a different set, and other sets. And, of course, do some non-9/11 stuff.

Correct. Those also include the mechanical floors, which have more cross-bracing than elsewhere in the structure, thus the window scheme was different there.

I beleive that those were the mechanical floors. I could be wrong on this, but I think that there were no spandrel plates on these floors to allow more area for air intake and exhaust for the air handler units. That is why there was cross bracing in the core of these floors. The same thing existed from the 7th floor on down, below the tridents on the outside. No spandrels = core digonal bracing.

People hated the design of the original boxy WTC in the first place. I think people will grow to accept and love the design.

And then one day that French Spiderman guy will climb it.
