Brownonomics not a disastrous as reported

I see that you think house prices going up is a good thing: why do you think that?

I dont. I think its a very bad thing. Sorry, I was being a tad facetious.

Not quite the cause of all out ills, its not that simple, but its a better soundbyte than most.

Politicians lie. Thats not hypocrisy though. Thats just a fact.

Hyposcrisy is not admitting that without Labours changes in the last session the poor would have been even more hard done by.

Yes indeed. You see we largely agree, only interest rates being too low is the cause of our troubles, not too high. They havent been double digits for well over 10 years either.

And I remember the last time they were and we nearly lost our house. Guess what govt that was? The ones who thought they could run a country by playing around with things like that. Stable economy for how long?

I quite agree that the financial sector should have been reigned in, which is one reason why 'Brownonomics' is/was such a terrible thing for this country. To be fair though, Brown had no option but to bail out the banks once TSHTF because a bank like RBS going under would have had a catastophic effect on the global economy. Perhaps he should have kept a closer eye on Fred Goodwin, rather than appointing him as a special advisor to the treasury and publicly stating that he wished to "encourage the risk takers"?

Who set the wheels in motion for the financial greed and skulduggery in this country? Who set up the FSA to oversee it?

Maybe Brown should not have set inflation as the over-arching priority for the MPC having conveniently removed housing from the inflation index to quite fraudulently make himself look better and make us all think we are rich "cos my house has gone up £40k".

Stable economy until the worldwide credit crunch that was not Browns doing. Maybe the lack of affordable or council housing for poorer people affected the housing market? Who set those wheels in motion?

And if the rich decide they dont want to pay that much tax?

I never said how much. What do think is fair for a rich person to pay? Do you feel everyone should pay the same? Do you feel companies like BP and other huge money making corporations should not pay more towards this country?

Do you think it is fair that someone who earns more than me would get a tax break over me purely because they are married for a year and I have been in a stable relationship for 15 years? What about tax exiles pumping money into the coffers of the MP's we elect so they get even more preferential treatment?

Labour certainly did some good things, but they also created a client state, where welfare dependecy is more profitable than working for a living and where the welfare bill is bankrupting the country.

Sorry you nearly lost your house, but the fact remains that interest rates that are too low and just as bad as interest rates that are too high, and its lax fiscal policy that has resulted in us being where we are now.

I'm sorry, you cant keep blaming the Torys when Labour had 13 years in power to make changes. Its also worth pointing out that it was Brown that established the catastrophic triparthied regime that so signally failed to regulate the financial sector and you havent addressed my point about removing housing from the inflation index.

A worldwide credit crunch when the City is at the centre of world finance? Nothing to do with Brown then, is it? Oh no, it all started in America, except more of it happened here than anywhere else, right under Brown's nose.

RBS, HBOS, Bradford and Bingley, Northern Rock etc etc. These are/were British banks. You cant just blame it on some nebulous global event over which Brown had no control. Brown had control of the most significant financial centre on the planet and it was under his aegis that this happened.

As to council housing - again, blaming Thatcher when Labour had 13 years in power to remedy the situation is pathetic. If the Tories are culpable then Labour is even more so.

Its not a question of should its a question of will.

And they wont.

Do you wonder why companies like Google dont have their tax base in the UK? Seriously, they are a global company, why not set up shop here? Could it possibly be because they dont like our tax regime?

And how are you going to raise money when the wealth generators and unwilling to invest?

Google Red Herring while you are at it.

Labour certainly did some good things, but they also created a client state, where welfare dependecy is more profitable than working for a living and where the welfare bill is bankrupting the country.

Yet they tried to make it better to work than be on the dole. What did the Tories do for single mums? When did the Tories introduce the minumum wage?

Tell me what they should be? And what the average has been in the Labour years and how this smashed the world economy. What a fair interest rate for my mortgage?

Ah ha, you ran away from some of the issues that caused the problems. Did he or did he not at least try and set up some regulation? Remind me what the Tories did.

A worldwide credit crunch when the City is at the centre of world finance? Nothing to do with Brown then, is it? Oh no, it all started in America, except more of it happened here than anywhere else, right under Brown's nose.

So the 1.4 trillion in sub prime mortgages were all Browns fault? Do you think he should have let the banks fail? Do you think the average homeowner in Britain suffered more than the average American? Or what about the ecomony? Or unemployment?

RBS, HBOS, Bradford and Bingley, Northern Rock etc etc. These are/were British banks. You cant just blame it on some nebulous global event over which Brown had no control. Brown had control of the most significant financial centre on the planet and it was under his aegis that this happened.

What would have happened had the Tories been in? Would those banks have been stopped?

One of the main causes of the housing bubble was the disastrous policy on council housing from the Tories. That's a fact. A stable economy for a decade was good enough for me. Certainly better than any other govt I have lived under. How about you?

I stumbled upon this website:-
http://www.ukpublicspending.co.uk/index.php
With it you can chart various Gov't spending from the year 1700 and frozen to death.

I maybe missing something, probably am missing something, but if you chart Public Spending as a %age of GDP then it's been pretty stable(ish) since 1950, roundabout 40% mark +/- 5%.

National Debt as a %age of GDP has been stable(ish) apart from a couple of dips from about 1970.

Spending on Welfare is much lower than 1980's/90's.

I'm then wondering why the need to slash and burn to such an extent as is being proposed when it's not drastically different from previous years.

Is doing it as a %age of GDP not good.??

Until the minimum wage, surely being on benefits would have been even more profitable than working for 80p an hour?

I think they should all move their head-offices over here, and pay no tax.
We only want the N.I. contributions on their work-force.
