British Chiropractic Association v Simon Singh

BJ- If there's one common factor I've found amongst the well known names around the sceptical scene I've met or had any contact with, it's their approachability. Our greatest strength is in communication and these are folk who want to get their message across.

Obviously I just snipped all the pages about my advice for his new book. I'd be embarrassed at how grateful the guy was.

I'm sure the truth is hiding in there somewhere

Just to keep this thread up to date, last night the BBC series See You In Court took a close look at the BCA v. Simon Singh libel case. You can view it on iPlayer for the next six days:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01112ws

Incredibly, the British Chiropractic Association seems to be miffed at the BBC's "bias"...
http://www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk/For-the-Media-See-you-in-Court-BBC-3-May-81-mi.aspx

...although the BCA's President, Richard Brown, isnt' quite so forthright about it:
http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=144900082245215

It's worth noting that Richard Brown condemns "unethical practice styles" in the above Facebook post, but says he supports "diversity" here:
http://www.ebm-first.com/chiropract...s/1524-chiropractic-towards-new-horizons.html

Apparently that diversity would include the fictitious 'Vertebral Subluxation Complex' - according to a letter of "no confidence in the GCC" which he co-signed and which can be read in its entirety here:
http://adventuresinnonsense.blogspot.com/2010/11/chiropractic-trade-organisations-launch.html

Seems to me that he's a bag of contradictions, which perhaps isn't surprising if he's required to be all things to all chiropractors. Some leadership, though.

"Perhaps the most damning part of the programme was the clip of Dara O'Briain relating his experience of repeatedly seeing a chiropractor before being told that his problem was caused by sitting on his wallet. Whatever the merits or otherwise of his criticism, the BCA does not condone high volume treatment in the absence of a careful clinical assessment and regular review. "

I am confused. Is Richard Brown saying that the thickness of Dara O'Briain's wallet should have been kept under review by the chiropractor?

I'll allow everyone to add their own punchline!

I recorded it last night, just catching up now (I hope I didn't miss the end, there seems to have been some delay, at least on the HD channel). Why can't they just tell one story at a time, rather than interleaving two completely unrelated ones?

Surely not!

ETA: I think I just spotted Mojo in the background. :)

If it was a cash-only practice, yes. ;)

There was a technical problem for a few minutes at the start. For those who can't access iPlayer, the programme is now available in two parts on Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5su8am0b58
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMfm0R_DEuM

Note that the BCA said:
The BCA was not approached by the producers of the programme for comment, and consequently, the programme was biased to the Simon Singh “side” of the story.
The implication being that the programme makers couldn't possibly have made an unbiased programme without the BCA's comment.

Just got this email titled "A message from Simon Singh and Ben Goldacre"

Dear Libel Reform Supporter,
Last week, we gave evidence to the Parliamentary Scrutiny Committee examining the draft defamation bill. We sat alongside Philip Campbell (editor of Nature) and Fiona Godlee (editor of the British Medical Journal) and explained how English libel law currently hinders free speech in science and medicine and we outlined how the law could be reformed.
You can watch our evidence online here:
http://www.badscience.net/2011/06/nerds-at-the-parliamentary-committee-on-the-draft-defamation-bill/ (our session starts at 17.40)
Other witnesses who have given evidence in recent weeks include the editor of the Guardian, Mumsnet, Global Witness, Which?, BBC, Internet Service Providers Association, English PEN, Index on Censorship, Sense About Science… and Carter-Ruck. In fact, we are currently engaged in a battle against vested interests who are arguing in favour of the status quo. Seeing some of the evidence presented to Parliament, we wonder where these witnesses have been for the last five years.
Thank you to all of you who have written to the Committee supporting our aims. They will be spending the summer analysing these and writing a report. In the coming months our campaign will have to keep libel reform on a crowded parliamentary agenda by meeting and briefing as many politicians as possible. We will have to hold Ministers to account if the final bill, due in October, does not amend the law in ways that will protect everyone who wants to speak out, from the BBC to bloggers. We need to make sure politicians understand that this is a once in a century opportunity to strike a fair balance between writers and genuine claimants.
Your support has brought us to this historic point. Your voices, help, donations, the Big Libel Gig and the Geek Calendar have all played their part. We are conscious that we must not lose that momentum. Next week we will be asking you to write to MPs urging them to support a libel reform bill that addresses the key problems, but at the moment the campaign needs your financial support to continue our work over the coming months.
If everyone who has signed the libel reform petition donated just £1, it would enable us to campaign on all fronts through to the autumn. Of course, if you are willing to donate more than £1, then that would be very much appreciated. Every little bit (and every big bit) helps. You can donate at http://www.justgiving.com/libelreformappeal2011 or email donate@libelreform.org for other ways to donate.
Thanks to your support over the last two years libel reform is on the political agenda. Now it is time to persuade the Ministry of Justice to deliver genuine reform.
