Britain is done with coal power

We've got quite a few windmills here in Oxfordshire and I've never seen a whale near them, presumably we have some kind of ultrasonic repellent device to keep them away.
But on the other hand, they are surrounded by mountains of dead birds aren’t they? That’s what I’ve been told.

That's because you've been looking for the wrong sort of whales.

Trump and Co are afraid of wind mills because it might prove a danger to swine: they might have heard of the japanese yama kujira (山鯨, lit. "mountain whale"), an euphemism used to circumvent the ban on eating meat during the Edo period.

Similarly, you would be offered "nightingale's tongue" sandwiches in some mideastern countries where ham was proscribed (Syria, Iraq, Iran and Lebanon), according to many travellers in the 1950's

My dad was the site commissioning engineer for the boilers at Ratcliffe-on-Soar.
He was working for the company that made them.

Their sonar is epic. A whale singing off the Great Barrier Reef can be singing the same song as one in Puget Sound. (Allowing for transmission time, of course.) I was boat crew one summer when the boffins were recording those songs. (Sadly, I didn't have my .50s on board.)

It also matters how deep the top soil is. If the whales hit the substrate too quick they'll seek deeper soil before reproducing.

Just wanted to share this good news.

The UK is about to stop producing any electricity from burning coal - ending its 142-year reliance on the fossil fuel.

The country's last coal power station, at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, finishes operations on Monday after running since 1967.

This marks a major milestone in the country's ambitions to reduce its contribution to climate change. Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel producing the most greenhouse gases when burnt.

Minister for Energy Michael Shanks said: "We owe generations a debt of gratitude as a country."

I had to keep double-checking the dates on this, as I was aware that the last coal-fired power station in Britain closed in October 2024.

Why are you posting an article that's getting on for two years old as if it's news?

So weird. Stumbled across the newspaper article on the NRK page and could've sworn it was recent. I guess it was under suggested reading and the whole 'phase out coal by 2030' part made me think it was current events,so I didn't check the date (or the one on the English language article I Googles to have a source to post here). So, I guess... Belated good news 🙃?

Thanks for putting the E in ISF, ig.
