Bridge collapses in Atlanta

The conspiracy theories were starting literally as I was watching the video feed. Geez.

Meanwhile, between this and the first Braves game tonight at the brand new *************** Park, my ass is telecommuting today.

Well, that news sucks for loads of people (says me who has been through the hell that is Atlanta rush hours (which do not actually rush at all) traffic a good number of times. And with no real bypass ability!!!!!

This is like 3 miles from my current residence and a couple of hundred feet from where I used to live. Fortunately, I work from home and the wife's commute is entirely outside the perimeter, so it won't affect us directly.

And with no real bypass ability!!!!!

Uh, there is a bypass actually.

Yeah, there was a lot of construction stuff being stored under there and it appears to have caught ABLAZE though I haven't seen any conclusive stories on exactly what and how yet. There are a lot of photos of the stuff stored there from past months and someone had a photo of the fire before it went nuts. The smoke was insane but at least it meant everyone was already starting to avoid the highway and then police were redirecting traffic well before the collapse.

And of course, every local channel (ABC, CBS, NBC, don't know about FOX) had to have 5 hours of "breaking news", wherein they speculated over and over about what had burned, how long repairs may take, etc. Plus the reminders every 5 minutes that there had been a fire, a section of I-85 had crashed, nobody was hurt, firefighters had been under the section that collapsed "literally seconds" before it fell, and maybe Atlanta Public Schools would close. Spoiler alert, they didn't, but Dekalb did.

Really, with what was happening and what we knew about it, 15 minutes would have been enough time to tell us. Heck, put a little scroll across the bottom of the screen if you have to, but you don't need five hours of continuous coverage.

It could have been a gravity surge. Almost all the wreckage fell in a downward direction. Did anyone check LIGO?

You have my sympathy. :)

Naked singularity, no doubt.

The aerial footage (at least the unredacted, unfaked stuff) shows the bridge fell in its own footprint. Plainly, physics has something to say here. You don't get free fall speed in a "natural" collapse.

I can't help but wonder, with a bridge going down and major traffic delays, if anyone has been tracking Chris Christie lately?
