Brexit: Now What? Part II

Well its worse than not leaving and im not sure it provides a soft landing back in. I think rejoining would mean swallowing pride. Unlikely.
Whose pride? Not the 48.3% Remainers, nor the dead Leavers and living Remainers who'll come of voting age in the next couple of years. If the Lib Dems can concentrate the Remain vote by 2019 - with a general election due in 2020 - a government would have to be suicidal to launch into a hard Exit.

Can hard-line Exiters take command of the government in the next two years? Not a chance.

I was thinking more joining the euro. Or something similar

I find it hard to believe that people like Farage are genuinely racist and xenophobic. I tend towards it being a show. mind you I'm doubting that more and more.

Depends on what you mean by racist and xenophobic. I don't think that Farage wants them all rounded up and sent back to Oooga-Booga land but I also think that Farage doesn't want his immediate vicinity cluttered up with people with strange accents and funny-coloured faces. I'm almost certain that Farage aspires to a country where there are a small number of immigrants who know their place and the country is run by white, middle-aged, middle-class, public-school educated men and an adoring white working and lower-middle class look up to them and allow them to get on with governing.

I think he, and his ilk, are uncomfortable that there are places where non-British faces predominate and would prefer that it didn't happen.

Any nominations for the "thoughtful" politicians that the chancellor spoke of yesterday.

Farage is ironically married to a German. He is also complaining that his £100k+ wage makes him poor - 2014 figures. It's a tough life, eh?
He also maintains he will be an MEP until after Brexit

Well I guess that Farage considers his wife's German accent to be "not strange" (in the same way that Daddy Don's American accent wasn't strange) ;)

His attempt to become British Ambassador to the US is a testament to his resolute desire to remain clamped to the public teat

I think the Foreign Office missed a big opportunity there.

They should have told him he would become British Ambassador to the US but that he needed to learn the skills in a similar function in a smaller country. And then appoint him as British Ambassador in the Republic of Fiji or in the Kingdom of Tonga for two or three years (at least). :D

...that said. There isn't a country on the planet with which the UK is so disinterested that diplomatic relations could withstand a "Faraging" ;)

Both of your suggestions look a little too "hospitable". I'd suggest somewhere very inhospitable and malarial in Africa - or maybe Australia, they can take a joke and in any case we owe them for Neighbours and Home and Away

I don't think Ambassador for a small island would be an appropriate stepping stone to Ambassador to the US. What you want is something similar to the US, a collection of states. How about the British Ambassador to Eastern Europe?

And things are not getting any better as far as 'having a plan' goes:

Hammond admits Brexit will take too long - and be too expensive - for Britain to stick to the Article 50 timeline

and the article offers this amusing/disturbing comment:

Leaving the EU requires negotiations between 28 countries on trade in myriad industries. As former cabinet secretary Gus O'Donnell said of the only country — Greenland — that has ever left the EU:*"Greenland has a smaller population than Croydon and it has one issue, and that's fish. Still took three years to exit EU."

Inflation is still below the Bank of England target rate of 2%. A year ago the economists were bleating about the threat of deflation.

Really? and of course you are going to offer links to back that up right? Meanwhile in the real word you have government ministers admitting they can't deliver Brexit on time and that there will be significant extra costs involved.

ETA: You did read the whole article right? I mean the experts don't seem to share your cheery view:

However, he said the slide in sterling would start to feed through to shop prices in February or March.
That view was echoed by Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, who said: "The drop in sterling means we have to expect a further increase in clothing inflation over the next year."

The price of food and non-alcoholic beverages climbed 0.4% in November - four times the rate for the same month last year.

The Bank of England expects inflation to continue to rise during 2017 to 2.7% and remain above the 2% target until 2020.

Sorry, but crimes against humanity are still prohibited...

Don't forget that the host state has the right to decline to accept an individual a ambassador by rejecting their letter of credence.

Oops ! I have forgotten this.

And appointing him as Chief Executive of the Falklands Islands would not be a good idea. I don't think the UK wants a new war with Argentina... ;)

It would be one of those fake wars. Neither country is in much position to do a lot...
