Brexit: Now What? Part II

Whilst that's strictly true, it's money that won't be coming to the treasury instead and so it'll have to be "replaced" from the "£350m a week"

I see that Theresa May has found another £2bn a year to fund scientific research:

<link removed due to my post count not letting me quote it>

That "£350m a week" will be stretched pretty thinly. At the moment IIRC it's being used to fund

  • Scientific research
  • Brenda and Stavros' refurb
  • Nissan (and all other manufacturers') additional costs post-Brexit
  • Tens of thousands of additional civil servants
  • Farming subsidies until at least 2020
  • Fishing subsidies until at least 2020
  • Replacement regional development aid until at least 2020

I've probably missed some and no doubt there will be others in the future but these are the explicit promises I can remember.

Gee, Brexit is really saving the UK taxpayer a fortune

Some of it might be used to prop up our woefully inadequate armed forces. The navy was reported this morning as not having many ships. Gosh that came as a surprise

It will also be left without any surface to surface missiles by 2018.

I was always very fond of gun battleships, but they're simply ineffective and inefficient for modern warfare. Yet, The Royal Navy is set to rely solely on guns for it's anti-ship operations, akin to removing all naval guns from ships in an earlier era. In the good old days that would (rightfully) mean drawing and quartering of those responsible.

I wonder if there is a possible deal to be made here re Scotland and Gibraltar that would allow Spain to change her mind and allow Scotland and Gibraltar some sort of special status in the EU.
If Catalonia was to have the same status, Spain might object.

Instead of guns the navy now has aircraft carriers - but also no planes for them, or so I've read. Mmm. What about rams, like the Merrimack?

It currently has neither but plans to have both in 2020 or so.

Rams would be spectacular and highly effective IF you manage to score a hit. Blimey, UK has fallen low indeed.

Not likely. Gibralter and Northern Ireland possibly, as both would have EU member states arguing on their behalf, but I think Scotland would need to vote for independence before the EU would be willing to make any special deals for them.

You can add a large cut in corporation tax to your list.

Yeah, that was the first think that struck be when I read about the £2B bribe. Something'll have to go.
Maybe the Tories will finally bin the NHS and bale foreigners and the EU.

Wow that "£350m a week" is proving to be conveniently elastic. If only the rest of the government budget was similarly so then we'd never have anything close to a deficit.

The trouble is that people will believe this **** and despite increasing budget deficits and negative impact on the economy, will still insist that Brexit has saved money for the UK taxpayer

They have rowed back on Boris's plan to bring the Royal Yacht Britannia back into service.

I expect once the Queen dies then the rejuvenated royals will require a new platform for developing international trade luxury yacht built at the taxpayer's expense.

You voted for it.

I don't remember ever being offered a vote on anything to do with the royals; certainly not their boat. :boggled:

Just like everything else to do with the Leave campaign, so many contradictory things said that no-one knew what the Leave campaign actually stood for in tangible policy terms.

Recommissioning the Royal Yacht or building a replacement was as clear a commitment as what type of immigration reform would be in place post-Brexit or whether the aim was to be in or out of the EEA.

I think Spain would prefer that Gibraltar was outside of the EU and the single market. Business that would otherwise prefer to be in Gibraltar would have increased incentive to be in Spain instead.

More good news

And that leads to the OBR's third big point, that Britain's borrowing - the deficit - is likely to be higher over the next five years than previously forecast.

By 2020, the Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates that the government will be borrowing £25bn more than the OBR predicted in its last economic outlook in March.

Fourthly, the OBR will say that public sector net debt will rise significantly - by as much as £80bn by 2020, according to the IFS, a figure which could hit £100bn by the following year.

Gosh, that "£350m a week" has to stretch a really, really long way.

At what point does the government throw its hands in the air and say that Brexit is too economically damaging to the UK to continue ? Is the need to satisfy the needs of 52% of the population who took part in the referendum worth breaking the UK economically despite the fact that whatever post-Brexit solution we end up with will only satisfy a minority of those who took part in the referendum ?

We could sell Gibraltar to Spain and use the money to pay off some of the debt.

I hope we get a better deal than when we sold loaned in effect gave away Diego Garcia to the USA.

Gib will go with Britain, it's too handy a tax haven to let it go anywhere else.
