BREAKING: Israeli Labor Party Agrees to Join Next Gov't.

lieberman is a fascist/racist pig.

You may wish to read the following, it is quite revealing:
http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article10420.shtml
Lieberman is no abnormality
Byline: Nimer Sultany
(Excerpt: "Focusing on Lieberman distracts the discussion from the real issues to the person of one unpleasant politician who says ignominious things others are generally unwilling to say ... He cannot be easily dismissed as a marginal case of excess or abnormality of the Israeli political system.")

The Fool asks -- "does it concern you?"

Not really.
Lieberman's central idea of land swap or population swap that would include Palestinian citizens of Israel and his view of this minority as a demographic and strategic threat to the self-proclaimed Jewish state are actually not controversial among the major parties and elites in Israel.

I personally would like to see the "Disengagement" that Arik Sharon began, be continued.

Sources in all three arms of law enforcement said that charges will be brought against Lieberman within four to six weeks.

What concerns me is that the Israeli government will pursue policies to keep the muslim population of Israel concentrated as much as possible into small areas near the border so that these areas could be "traded" for Israeli settlements on the west bank as part of a 2-state solution. Thus Israel simultaneously gains desired territory on the west bank and rids itself of as much as possible of its Arab population.

Allowing Arab communities to join Palestine if they so desired would seem to be compatible with allowing self-determination, but what concerns me is that Muslims may end up being kicked out of Israel regardless of their opinions on the matter.

It would not necessarily be an either/or thing. Israeli Jews could make life as unpleasant as possible for Israeli Muslims in order to coerce them to join the Palestinian state, rather than unilaterally voting to expel them.

Is this just paranoid delusion on my part, or is there the possibility of events moving along these lines?

I don't know what to answer you on that point.
In general, the laws and the overall norms of Israeli society would preclude such a thing.
However, the idea of the Israel's Arabs (not just Muslims) being a "fifth column" is something we have been exposed to several times over the years.

  • The Movement for Quality Government petitioned the High Court on Thursday against the appointment of Yisrael Beiteinu leader Avigdor Lieberman as Israel's next foreign minister and deputy prime minister.
The petition says Lieberman may not legally serve in the key posts in light of the criminal investigations against him.

Please continue to alert us to legitimate complaints about the conduct of the IDF, but hyperbole like this just weakens your arguments and makes you look like a raving antisemitic fanatic.

Anti-semitic? how come? I've never had a problem with anyone for simply being Jewish.

You're talking nonsense. but unlike some you are stopping short of calling me a racist.

All I can do is react the same way as I do when the others bleat it ....

"yawn"

Would you really like to put the Israeli army up against those in Sudan, Rwanda, Congo? Recent actions by Serbs, Croats, and the Russians in Chechnya? How about the Chinese army in Tibet?

Oh dear, the tired old "yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda yadda" of bringing up every other injustice in order to dilute the criticism of Israel.

"yawn"

Netanyahu is going to be the PM? Or just a member of the party?

Also, is this the same party that has Avigdor Lieberman in it?

I am not "diluting criticism of Israel". I criticize them when I think they deserve criticism.

If you wish to claim that specific actions of the Israeli military command are immoral, I will agree with that. If you wish to claim that individual Israeli soldiers have acted in an immoral fashion, I will agree with that. But this is not Attila the Hun's army we are talking about here. This is not the Japanese army during the rape of Nanking. This is not the Serbian army in Srebrenica. Or the Sudanese army in Darfur.

Do you really believe that "The IDF is probably the most immoral army in the world!!! " If not, why do you make such absurd statements?

Yes.

(He is the leader of the Knesset -Parliament- Likud Party, and was tasked with organizing a coalition by next week --- and it appears he is all set with enough Parliament votes to maintain a majority against all future "No confidence" motions that may crop up from time to time).

No.

(Although, Yvett Lieberman's party will be included in Netanyahu's new Government)

Tin Foil Timohy is annoyed that some people occassionally want to talk about something else except for israelbad israelievil israeldying israeltobedestroyed israelnazi (etc., etc.)

How dare you be interested in anything else! Stop "diluting the criticism of Israel!"

And a lot of people just want to talk about tin foil timothy.......

I can't really recall TFT ever supporting an Israeli action and I can't really recall you ever being critical of one..... Maybe, in the grand scheme of things, you cancel each other out :)

Unfortunately, on the internet noise of equal volume but opposite phase still seems to sum rather than cancel.

Looking a bit shaky so far. Apparently Lieberman is no good for being Foreign Minister, because he hasn't shot anyone with a gun. I would have thought that was an essential skill for a diplomat.

It is in this climate that Benjamin Netanyahu this week became leader of Israel's 32nd Government: that makes it 32 governments in 61 years.
It has been 20 years since an Israeli government completed its full term, and the challenges for this one are as great as they've been for years.
Israel today is deeply divided. Netanyahu takes his place at the head of one of the shakiest coalitions imaginable.
Netanyahu has had to make so many deals to put together this Government that he's ended up with 30 ministers and seven deputy ministers, the largest ministry in the country's history.
"This is an unnatural coalition with a great many faultlines running across it," says Jonathan Spyer from the Global Research in International Affairs Centre in Israel.
Two of the key foundations are Yisrael Beiteinu's leader Avigdor Lieberman and Labour's Ehud Barak, respectively the Foreign Minister and the Defence Minister, who will need to work well together.
Lieberman has already displayed a propensity to behave in decidedly undiplomatic ways. On his first day in office he unilaterally ditched the two-year-old Annapolis peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
Then late last week, Lieberman was questioned by police for seven hours about money laundering allegations.
The animosity between Barak and Lieberman is legendary. Barak is Israel's most decorated soldier, while Lieberman, a former bouncer from Moldova, migrated to Israel and never served in the army.
The hostility became public during the election campaign, when Barak asked of Lieberman: "When has he ever shot anyone? When has he ever held a rifle?"
Lieberman hit back: "Is that a criterion? This is the leader of the Left?"
