Looks like the Boy Scouts are going to give the Catholic Church a run for its money.

PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - The Oregon Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the release of 20,000 pages of confidential Boy Scouts of America records dubbed the "perversion files" documenting suspected or confirmed sexual abuse by its leaders and volunteers.

Doesn't it make sense that predators would choose to locate amongst their quarry, concealing themselves? Wolves in sheep's clothing?

So you have the church with its youth groups and here the boy scouts and sandusky in the boy's charity organization. Sodomizing them in his basement as they screamed for help.

I don't know the answer but you could go through conviction cases by occupation and see if predators disproportionately self-select into little boys' groups, little girls' kid groups, oh geez law enforcement personnel at juvenile delinquency housing or whatever. I'd speculate that they do. Not like in overwhelming numbers because there aren't that many to begin with. But it's probably significant.

When volunteers and employees were suspected of sexually abusing children, Boy Scout officials often didn't tell police, files from 1970-91 reveal. In many cases they sought to hide the situation.

Over two decades, the Boy Scouts of America failed to report hundreds of alleged child molesters to police and often hid the allegations from parents and the public.

Volunteers and employees suspected of abuse were allowed to leave citing bogus reasons such as business demands, "chronic brain dysfunction" and duties at a Shakespeare festival.

When a Los Angeles Scout leader was caught by police with hundreds of photos of naked Scouts in 1984 — many showing him giving enemas to boys — Scouting officials worked closely with police and the county children services department to keep the case from becoming public and embarrassing the Scouts.

A summary of a meeting between Scouting officials and local agencies contained this conclusion: "We recognize that this unfortunate situation was no reflection on the Boy Scouts of America whose integrity and reputation must be maintained."

The Scouts were marginally better than the Catholic Church in that when they received such allegations they actually booted the offender and blacklisted his name so that he couldn't join any other chapters surreptitiously. Unfortunately, they actively hid the allegations from the authorities so "marginally better" still leaves them squarely in Moral Failure Land.

Women can be leaders of Scout troops, of course. And there are divisions of Scouting (Sea Scouts, Explorer Scouts, maybe more?) that are co-ed.

Yet another example of how defensive and backward the leadership of the BSA is. Usually I want MrArisia to wear his Eagle Scout stuff when we are at our daughter's Girl Scout ceremonies, but not anymore. I hope the boys who have been victimized over the years take it to the BSA like victims of the Catholic Church have made the Church pay.

Thing to remeber is that a lot of these causes probably wouldn't be enough for a conviction. Throw in the fact that publicaly labling someong a pedophile is likely kinda dicey and you get the result that a secret blacklist is about the only viable option.

The Baptist church has a similar problem, perhaps not as widespread as the catholic, but one of our local Baptist ministers is currently doing time for just such a thing.

And that case was delt with by the police. In most cases you don't have that kind of evidence. Good luck with beyond reasonable doubt or even balance of probability.

This is an organization for which membership is respected, and is often considered in job applications, etc.

This organization is permitted to discriminate on the basis of religion.

This organization has a special status with the US government.

What group of people, if you know, is very heavily involved in this organization?

I'm not sure why it took 4 months, the BS have been fighting the release of the files for years, so I suppose they found a way to hold out a bit longer.

The press conference is over. Kelly Clark's law firm in Portland says it has published the files on its website. CNN is not linking out to the reports in this blog post because we haven’t vetted the allegations that they contain, and because the attorneys say that they haven’t checked the veracity of all the allegations.
