Book Series That Go Sour

I liked most of Herbert's Dune series. He had a bunch of other books, he had interesting ideas but for the most part, the rest of his books were meh but worth reading because they were relatively short and I liked what he was trying to do.
Dune Messiah was not meant to be a seperate novel; Herbert wrote it as the last part of original novel Dune.
But the publisher was worried about length, and cut the last fourth of the novel out. It aslo gave the original a "Happy ending".
After Dune was a huge sucess, the last part was published as Dune Messiah.

A valid concern considering the later books.
