In the pile of old books to recycle are a bunch of bibles, an entire AA library and two sets of encyclopedias older than me. And a ton of government stuff like a pictorial of the 1970 census and other related things. I saved the big book of maps of the sewers in Mex City, 1973 version, and two AA books about how they get you in. The daily reflection and AA prayer books are still buried in a mountain of scrap paper.

Scrappers don't read nor resell religious materials. It's all weight to fill the wallet.

8enotto, every person who scrounges books from the dump should read Bohumil Hrabal's Too Loud a Solitude. Actually everyone should, but we can at least start there.
 
We had a segment on the book-banning on Quora the other day, and I wondered how long it would be before we saw book burning….. The next day.

Sure, this lunatic is a private citizen and if he wants to burn a few books he can…. But look at the enthusiastic response he’s getting from similarly-minded folks. We may not see “the government” engaging in this anytime soon, but I would not be at all surprised to see right-wing politicians participating.

A number of years ago I was browsing in a book store when this little old lady and her husband walked by. She noticed a shelf containing books about the Freemasons and started loudly talking about a magazine article she read that said the Masons were secretly Satanists. I casually mentioned that most of the Founding Fathers were Masons. She looked confused and said "That can't be right" and her husband responded "He's right. They were." with an expression that made me think he had heard this a lot before, was getting tired of it, and found this situation amusing.

I thought at first that it was a mouse, but the offending scene is on Page 100, in the diversion "Prisoner on the Hell Planet," the four pages of the book in which the participants are drawn as humans. A man is shown, standing in a pool of blood, finding his wife has just committed suicide in the bathtub. One and a half breasts are shown as little dots in the picture, which is obviously what is really important here in the true story of an ex-concentration camp victim who has just killed herself.

I once thought Idiocracy was silly fiction. Later I came to believe it prophecy. Wrong again. It's already history.
 
Republicans have always been crossing the line into fascism and authoritarianism. This is just another example. Everyone knows it's not about "bad words" or nudity. It's about censorship.
