It's assumed that most of ended up somewhere in the church's coffers but where exactly isn't known. In India for example the Missionaries of Charity failed to publish the legally mandated accounts and ignored attempts to force them to account for their income.

That was my understanding. Which leads to an ethics question. If I donated money intending it to give medicine to sick people in Calcutta, is it moral for it to be spent on more gold furnishings in a church in Vatican City? I say it is not.

One could be forgive for running a hospice that was poor by Western Standards before contact with millions of dollars and a chorus of doctors criticizing the care...

They were poorly run by even Indian standards of the time.
