Yes, one could have a jolly time trying to define "pathetic" and "miserable", and then applying these definitions to the population as a whole to get a baseline, and then lining up numbers of volunteer kinky persons to relate their level of patheticism as opposed to that of the general population....

You can tell that it's fated to go smoothly because pathetic and miserable are objective terms so it's really hard for the person researching the subject to interject their personal bias into the findings.
