Actually what it tells me is how backwards the ME and the "desert" islamists are. (Thomas Friedman and others have stated there are two types of islam, desert and urban. Desert islam is the fundamentalist, traditionalist and the Urban islam is in places like Turkey, jordan and egypt (much more relaxed, more tolerant, more liberal. Lots of islamic scholars in the west have commented on this...The world is flat and hot, flat and crowded are both very good analysis of the economic interaction with the religious aspects... worth reading)

This form of desert islam is spread out of Saudi... They have come to dominate the general world view of the gulf. So in effect it is 40 years ago and the same ideas are being recycled around the gulf... But notice the freedom/anti corruption riots and revolutions sweeping this part of the world, those types of attitudes may be changing... one can hope.
