Not surprisingly, she failed.

I don't mean this to dismiss the serious problem of suicide among teens and young adults, and I feel very sorry for Alexa Ray Joel and her family.

But you gotta think that this wasn't a serious attempt, or else, she knows nothing about homeopathy.

I do suspect, though, that the "sleeping pills" are not truly homeopathic or they would have no effect at all.

On the other hand, this could prove to be the one benefit of homeopathic medicine: Depressed teenagers can't commit suicide with it.

That report also mentions herbal medication: wish they'd make their mind up. And further investigation seems to indicate Traumeel, if that's accurate, is used on horses; shades of Anthony Pengelly anyone?

'Traumeel is an effective medication for acute injuries and inflammation of the musculoskeletal system, avoiding at the same time the notoriously serious side-effects of common anti-inflammatory therapies'

Naturally, for common my brain first interpreted that word as conman.

Hmm those are some weak homeopathic dillutions. Could be that if you took enough of them that you might get a real effect.

No.

What is more likely is that there were some very real non-listed ingredients in the bottle.

Or she had a panic attack.

Maybe more likely, but I am seeing only 1/100 and 1/1000 dillutions. depending on the strength of the mother tincture that could well be with in the levels that can cause an effect.

Sorry, I was looking at the wrong formulation:

Aconitum napellus 3X (Reduces pain after injury) 30 mg; Arnica montana, radix 3X (Reduces swelling and bruising) 40 mg; Belladonna 4X (Reduces swelling and pain) 75 mg; Bellis perennis 2X (Treats bruises) 6 mg; Calendula officinalis 2X (Stimulates healing process) 15 mg; Chamomilla 3X (Soothing pain relief) 24 mg; Echinacea 2X (Immune support) 6 mg; Echinacea purpurea 2X (Stimulates healing process) 6 mg; Hamamelis virginiana 2X (Relieves bruised soreness) 15 mg; Hepar sulphuris calcareum 8X (Stimulates injury healing) 15 mg; Hypericum perforatum 3X (Relieves pain) 8 mg; Mercurius solubilis 8X (Reduces swelling) 15 mg; Millefolium 3X (Treats minor bleeding) 15 mg; Symphytum officinale 8X (Relieves joint pain) 24 mg. Plus, the company has released a statement:

Albuquerque, NM, December 6, 2009, We have been following the news of the reported suicide attempt by Alexa Ray Joel. Our first thoughts go to Billy Joel, Christie Brinkley and their daughter Alexa Ray. We wish them all well.

It is unclear what drugs were ingested by Alexa Ray Joel. Initially eight sleeping pills were mentioned by the police. Then a source close to the family mentioned Traumeel®.

Traumeel® has been used safely for 60 years in 60 countries. It is a homeopathic medicine made of very small doses of botanical and mineral natural ingredients for the temporary relief of muscular pain, joint pain, sports injuries and bruising. It is not an antihistamine. Like all homeopathic medicines, Traumeel® has an extraordinary high safety profile. It is available in several dosage forms including an ointment and tablet form. Specific to the tablet form there are only few side effects and there is no known drug interaction.

Traumeel® is a safe and effective homeopathic medication for acute injuries and inflammation of the musculoskeletal system, widely used worldwide in sports medicine. It aids recovery from sprains, strains, bruises, nerve pain and swelling without the serious sides effects associated with conventional anti-inflammatory drugs like NSAIDS.

Thierry Montfort, president and CEO, Heel USA, said “I am especially sensitive to this news about Alexa Ray Joel because I have a daughter the same age; and I feel particularly proud to head a medical company whose goal is to help patients with homeopathic medicines that have a very high safety profile.Heel's vision and mission is to build the bridge between homeopathy and conventional medicine. This is why Traumeel® is the most widely researched product in Heel’s portfolio. Our company is committed to scientific research on the efficacy and safety of its medicines. Our vision and mission is particularly relevant to modern integrative medicine as attested by the fact that Heel USA is the recipient of the the American College for Advancement in Medicine’s Corporate Vision Award for 2009."

If this is a purported medicine, surely any potentially toxic ingredients would have to be listed, regardless of the homeopathic preparations.

The FDA is toothless to stop monkey business in the herbal/homeopathic/supplement industries. They pretty much can't do anything til people have died.

I hope she doesn't up the ante in her next attempt.

I like how the homeopathic company reassured people that it was safe to take their medication in vastly over the 'recommended quantity.' I must try to obtain similar reassurances from the manufacturers of other products.

Homeopaths - "yep, our medicine has a great 'safety profile.' Take as much as you want.'

Real doctors - "You took HOW MANY sleeping pills? Jesus christ, get a stomach pump!"

Seriously, I hope she gets help. Next time it could be a real pharmaceutical, or a rope, or whatever else that can cause actual damage. If this is a cry for help, hopefully those close to her listen.

Hey, how do we know it wasn't just her demonstrating the uselessness of homeopathic medicine? Should we let people know that any time a skeptic takes a bottle of homeopathic medicine it is a suicide attempt?

At last ... homeopathic medicine has saved a life.

They should use her in their advertising.

The article doesn't say she attempted suicide, just that she was hospitalized after taking "several" pills. Several doesn't really sound like a suicide attempt. I could say I took several tylenol after a breakup and it wouldn't be seen as a suicide attempt, just an attempt to deal with a headache.
