Bill O Reilly:Slavery was not so bad.....

Here's the most context I could find:

“Slaves that worked there were well fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government, which stopped hiring slave labor in 1802,” he said. “However, the feds did not forbid subcontractors from using slave labor. So, Michelle Obama is essentially correct in citing slaves as builders of the White House, but there were others working, as well.”

Who would have predicted that the end of Obama's Presidency is when the GOP stopped dog whistling and turned to whistling?

I actually predicted it would happen in 2012.

That one fell apart when Trump began riding birtherism in 2011, so...I underestimated the racism, I guess.

Not surprisingly, the propaganda rag you linked to left out the actual context in which O'Reilly mentioned all of the groups aside from slaves that were involved in the construction of the White House. O'Reilly writes a lot of history books and is very interested in facts, which is what he presented.

Great. Please show the larger context.

O' Reilly wouldn't know a fact if it bit him and gave him rabies. And one or more should!!!!!

Some of the people who built the White House weren't slaves. That's nice. Some of them were, though, and that's all that was said.

O'Reilly, you don't have to attack everything the Obamas say.

BrooklynBaby, you don't have to defend everything O'Reilly says.

He re-ran the entire segment on his show tonight, but because of the convention it isn't being repeated at 23:00 as usual. You'll just have to take my word for it because I didn't tape it.

Here's the most context I could find:

The thing about O'Reilly is that, unlike many of the idiots that comprise Fox News and AM radio (Limbaugh's reaction was basically an extended freakout because the First Lady said the word "slavery"), he actually is somewhat intelligent. He knows full well how to sound halfway sensible, while still saying enough to stoke controversy and make good tv.

Historically speaking, of course, he's absurd.Slaves were generally given poor clothing, and fairly little in the way of food - and were often given absurd amounts of work to do. As I recall, there's fairly little known about work conditions in DC, but I doubt that it was a generally magnificent version of slavery - even if we ignore the fact that slavery as practiced in the US was an abomination in and of itself.

Hey Billo, I'm having a house built next year. Come be my slave, I'll feed you well! Well, being nutritionally minimum, of course. Can't have my inferiors actually enjoying it.

Context? There is no context which justifies the owning, the buying and the selling of human beings.

This seems basic.
