Bill O Reilly: Slavery Was Not So Bad...

O'Reilly's just tone deaf like most of the right. His info presentation was mostly just wallowing in his knowledge of history, something on which he prides himself and which sells his books and tv series. [Watch O'Reilly if you can stomach it; it's an hour long infomercial for Bill O'Reilly Inc.]

He stupidly got carried away with factoids. Sure, it's interesting to know what was ordered up to feed the workers and other stuff you can get from examining contemporary records. Presenting them from a desk at Fox, though, too many on the left are reminded that this is the comfy home of racist demagogues and confederacy apologists.

Frankly, though, it's a bit of a reach. Yeah, I waited for the broadcast to be repeated to hear the segment, but he essentially said that what Michelle had said was correct. People are reading into the minutiae that he's saying "Happy Slaves Tapping Their Toes and Longing for the Freedom That Being Cared For Afforded Them", the ballad of the South Will Rise Again crowd.

If they'd just learn that "fair and balanced" would also include the mandatory disclaimer.... "Actually, these particular slaves who worked on the White House were pretty well-fed and housed in relatively decent conditions.... of course, that doesn't say anything to the fact that they were enslaved, a despicable practice....".

Tone deaf. That's all.

I wonder sometimes what it must be like to have a brain that thinks there are things to say in favor of slavery but giving poor people health insurance is the biggest injustice imaginable. I've never been sufficiently drunk to accommodate both notions simultaneously.

<sarcasm>Hey if we still had slavery then the poor (slaves) would have free healthcare provided by their masters. If their condition made it so they were no longer an economic asset then their master, because he'd be a good christian of course, would still pay for their healthcare and living expenses. No need for government handouts!</sarcasm>
