Bill Maher: Liberal or Libertarian?

He thinks he's a Libertarian because he likes pot and hookers.

Exactly. He's libertarian where those positions don't differ sharply from liberalism. I suspect his support for the 2nd Amendment is not nearly so strong.

What's with all these silly labels?

Just make your mind up about each issue on its own merits.

Agreed.

What does it matter what category you can slip Bill Maher into anyways? Seems like a pointless topic of discussion TBO.

He's definitely not in the fiscal conservative wing of libertarianism.

I believe he's pro-government-paid-for-social programs. That is against libertarianism.

It's non-existant, is what it is. He's strongly pro-gun control but he has expressed some sympathy for gun owners. He once said something last season to the effect "I have guns at home in Beverly Hills so I'd never judge anyone in a bad neighborhood who owns guns but keeping assault rifles?"

In some ways, though, he is libertarian when it's not liberal. For instance, he's against hate crime legislature, which most liberals wouldn't be so against.

I watched it last night and he bashed on Hillary's health care plan. He seemed not so offended by the idea of government health care, but by how it seems to be a plan to funnel money to pharmaceutical companies.

He seems to be liberal with some moderation/libertarian thrown in.
