There's picking fights because of real political grievances and then there is trying to bait someone into a bloodbath because you think they are in the wrong religion. I'm thinking doing the latter was not what was intended.
It's an interesting thought, but doesn't seem to have much basis. The "bait" in this case is
the opportunity to threaten the life of someone for drawing a picture and a member of that very church has already done exactly that within the past couple of weeks. My sympathy for anyone thuswise "baited" is about equivalent to my sympathy for rapists who claim to have been "baited" by their victims' provocative clothing. (I doubt that any instrument known or conceivable to science would be able to detect either one.)
My more important point, though, is that arguing based on romantic notions of what the nation's founders intended is just a ridiculous notion from the get-go. For one thing, why should anyone care what they intended beyond mere historical curiosity? (I can guarantee that in another 240 years from now, no one will care how you or I intend our distant descendants then to live their lives either.)
And even if we did, the oft-made suggestion that they only intended Americans to use the first and second amendment freedoms for the most high-minded civil purposes disregards the fact that
they used those same freedoms to terrorize customs officials, raise mobs to burn loyalists out of their homes, print personalized screeds against their opponents that make YouTube comments look like business as usual, engage in the lucrative slave trade, and of course, violently overthrow the government. So they were either huge hypocrites, or their intentions for how the freedoms they fought for were to be used did not include as much restraint as you surmise.
Of course they're great historical figures. I spend a significant fraction of my free time reading about them and their accomplishments. But all the more reason not to sanitize them. Or history. There's one really good reason not to sanitize history: because it isn't over.
