Not so much. The wheel swings back and forth in an open pit mine, so it's expanding the pit, not digging into it mostly. Thing of it as "strip minging with a HUGE buzz saw." It can cut up to half the diameter of the big saw blade and suck up the product to be carted away on trucks. They have to be on the bounce to keep up with it.

Actually that is not a saw. It is a series of buckets on a wheel that excavate and dump the material onto a conveyor that runs the length of the arm it is attached to.
Weird that something that huge is still so essentially Flinstones.

Nobody claimed it was actually a saw. The 'Net went crazy when it was pictured crossing a road, things went down hill from there.
