Interesting, though for some reason I doubt this will provide much in the form of real world practical value.
 
These beams are at 1.75 trillion eV (10^12 eV, or TeV) per nucleon, times 208 nucleons, times two beams, so 7x10^14 eV per head-on collision. That's about 0.1 millijoules.

(ETA: The press release image may or may not be a real head-on collision. It'll take some data analysis before we even know.)

They wont be say anything until they study the data and that should take about a month.

Yes; it consists of tens of thousands of interacting particles, not unlike a gas, and it turns out their behavior is quite thermal. It has a temperature, an entropy, a (very interesting) viscosity, and so on.

ahh, I thought they were talking about a fireball that was subatomic in size.

To be honest, I stopped paying any attention to physicists since they flipped-flopped on the whole sun going round the earth thingy.

So is that temperature/energy near any point that we are looking for? Or is this just the opening slavo?

Will there be any unity properties with gravity or particle like the truth quark, i would assume this is still early on. (Just my warped layman's perspective)
 
You're right, nothing practical has ever come out of the CERN research organization. NOTHING PRACTICAL AT ALL :rolleyes:

Whenever anyone points to practical results from CERN research they point to by-products of the research like this. Any large project will produce similar results. I have never seen benefits to society due to the results of experiments themselves. At least after WW2.

At least after WW2? I'd be even more surprised if CERN produced practical results before WW2... although given certain theories about non-discovery of the Higgs....

Anyway, Feynman adequately dealt with the practical value of physics for me in a certain famous quotation.

Biochemistry draws its computational strength from taking data that is provided through the confimation of experimental values.

Without the theories of QM and atomic structure you can model the biochemistry of ion channels and the like.
