On the anniversary of his father's arrest

Bernie has lived to see his son buried, and to know that it's his own fault.

That is sad. It sounds like the whole thing took quite a toll on him, and it is a tragedy for his children.

I haven't seen any real evidence that he or his brother knew about their father's scam (from what I've read, they worked in a part of the company that was actually legitimate), so I'll assume he's just another victim of his odious father.

What a load of manure! The only person that Madoff's son is a victim of is himself, and the only things he succumed to are his own fears and, ultimately, strangulation.

I hope that when they served good old Bernie with the news, they served it cold.

If anything else, he must have been guilty of not looking too hard at things that should have appeared to be too good to be true, really like all of Madoff's direct victims. Yes, I realize there are also people who were indirectly hurt, who were not themselves 'investing' in this obvious scam, but frankly I have limited sympathy for those who handed their money to Madoff for promised fantasy profits and with no serious documentation to back it up.

I take no pleasure in the suicide, either. I do hope that Bernie's feelings weren't spared, and that he finally knows what it feels like to lose something precious to him -- just like it feels to lose all of your retirement savings to one of Bernie's scams.

If so, evolution in action. Those who don't take care of their kids tend to have kids less likely to survive and breed.

I'd heard similar, of course this is all media reports, it's not like I knew the guy. But he allegedly didn't give a crap about his kids or what happened to them, only cared about his wife.

Mark Maddoff was 46, I think he was old enough to be responsible for his own actions.

Did his wife care about her sons? If she did, and if Bernie cared about her, then he should have cared about their children too.

News story I saw on TV said that it was Mark Madoff and his brother who called the FBI and turned him in after he confessed to them that his whole company was a sham. It also said he hadn't spoken to his father or mother in 2 years.

Same news story said that Ruth Madoff (Bernie's wife) blames Bernie for the suicide completely.

I saw another news story on CBS last week interviewing former employees of the Madoff company that were being blacklisted within the industry from interviewing for jobs in the NYC area. They're pretty much having to move out of the state in order to even get asked to interview for jobs, much less gain employment. Some of the same employees lost their nest-eggs in the Madoff ponzi scheme, so it's doubly hard on them.

It doubtful that his fathers scandal and everything that went with it was the main factor in the suicide. The fact he chose that particular day sounds more like being spiteful but theres many working poor people and homeless people so what can you do...

I doubt it was about the money, rather a matter of shame and guilt.

From what I've read, the Maddoffs have been completely ostracized socially, and the entire family is taking the blame. The wife of the son who killed himsself (though still married to him) had to change her and her children's last names back to her maiden name some time ago due to death threats.

Being one of the most hated people in the world, especially by people who used to be your friends, and knowing your wife and kids were suffering similarly due to your family's scandal sounds like a pretty believable motive for suicide.
