New here.

Curious about those of you who are brave enough, and have the patience, to debate with believers (topic doesn't matter, UFOs, orbs, any woo woo topic) -- do you ignore those forums that are antagonistic towards skeptics? Or do you intentionally join those boards in spite of their attitude? Or do you stay with the ones that say they are open to "both sides?" (they may say that, but we know it's not true.)

I usually join based on subject matter and interest. Sometimes, however, I join because it sounds like fun, as with the Yahoo! forum Bash The Skeptoids.

I have been banned from every believer forum I ever joined, save for one.

Oh, and welcome!

I don't bother anymore with many other boards. There appears to be enough believers here to fill my time completely. I can count on two hands and half a foot the number of true skeptics on this forum. The rest are only part-time skeptics. That makes them almost full-time believers.

I hang out at the skeptics board at ghostvillage. There are some very nice people, and even a few skeptical believers, but we have sure had some heated discussions. Recently we have also discussed astrology and UFOs. Take a look at some of the discussions:

http://www.ghostvillage.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl

I also used to discuss with creationists at Christianity.com, but then they closed the science section, because they wanted to stop the discussions, and apparently they succeeded. I'm no longer there, but there were some interesting discussions taking place there. Even one fanatic creationist after a while admitted that Evolution might not be such a stupid idea as he had first believed, so good educational work was being done. The operators apprently didn't want people to learn anymore, so that was the end of that forum.

Was this comment tongue in cheek?

If not, how do you define and measure a "true skeptic"? I would be interested to know so I can guage myself against the "ideal".

That would make 12.5 true skeptics? Well, I'm for one a true skeptic, but not professional as I don't make money out of being skeptical. I might save some money being skeptical (not bying h'path remedies or calling psychic hotlines) but I am truly a full time skeptic. I do not believe in aliens on earth some part of the day, and other parts of the day I'm trying to debunk myself, that would be quite schizophrenic me thinks.

But I do agree that there are a whole lotta believers here on the forum, and I just love it, because they are so easy to debuk, and so far I haven't seen one single word that could make me a believer!

BTW, National day of Sweden today!
:sw:

I've hung around a couple of homeopathy boards but I've been banned from both and haven't got round to finding some more.

Hi,

There is not too many ufo-skeptic in France, so I try to writte in some ufo-believer forum in order to just say to this people "Not everybody agree on what you say about Roswell, abduction, and so on...".

But I think it's pretty hopeless...

See you,

Why, were you rude or condescending? The believer boards I have frequented have never banned me though I'm completely skeptical and very direct. Simply behave politely and respectfully, and they won't kick you out.

I had some fun on the Reader's Digest boards for a bit--very addictive arguing. A couple others from here also were there at the time. We were debating the evidence for survival of the soul, after a RD article opened that particular can of worms. None of us were banned, but we were accused of being minions of Satan.

I post occasionally on forums.atlantisrising.com, (and I've seen a couple of other familiar names from this forum).

I will say that some posters there are both waaaay out there, but at the same time, I've never been shouted down, ridiculed or otherwise abused there. Accordingly, I try to keep my own tone respectful.

You shouldn't be such a troublemaker then. Try to emulate me. I haven't been banned from this board.

If it's so easy to "debuk", then why don't you do some debuking?

Actually, Ian, I should thank you. I learned a great deal, both from you and from those who argued with you, that helped me in the Reader's Digest discussions. I must say, you are considerably better-mannered than some of them were.

But, soft, mercutio, what thought through yonder
window breaks, it is the sinnews of logic,
that nascent dawn that doth waken the torpor
and that bringeth light to the house of Skepsis.
The witches of woo shall call but once, and so
having called shall have warned the wizzened ear that
it is not meet to wait till Burnham wood doth
come to Dunsinane, but the quick will hear the
cry "Minions!" "Minions of Satan!" and they'll know
the minions live by Satan's liege, and do step
slowly upon each cloven hoof. It is thus
the quick know the cry is 'Get thee behind me,
Satan, and minions get behind he who is
soon to be cast from woo heaven.' For it is
that thou shall thus be banished from the woo.

Well . . . you are a minion of Satan. . .

. . . which has its benefits:
