Being "respected" by Putin is a perk... but what about the rest of the world?

One common factoid that Trump and other Republicans have pushed is the idea that Obama isn't "respected" by other countries. This is of course a highly questionable assertion considering that Obama has continued to have high approval ratings throughout most of Europe during his presidency.

Likewise Trump has argued that he would be better than Obama as president simply because Putin likes him. What he doesn't mention is the fact that Trump is highly unpopular throughout large parts of the world. This is especially the case with Americas close allies and friends in Europe who were appalled by the fact that someone like Trump could even be nominated as a presidential candidate let alone win the election.

This is something that Trump and republicans have tried to ignore: the loss of international prestige and image. The president of the US, and by extension the US itself, is probably going to be incredibly unpopular during his presidency.

Less than a quarter of people across all 15 countries surveyed express confidence in Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for U.S. president. In fact, overwhelming majorities in most of the countries surveyed have little or no confidence in his ability to handle international affairs. This includes 92% of Swedes, 89% of Germans, 88% of Dutch and 85% of both the French and British. This distaste is especially strong in Sweden, where 82% have no confidence at all in him.

You might ask why does this matter? Who cares what other people think about our president? Ultimately it does matter because if the US is treated in high regard other states will allow it to get away with things that it otherwise couldn't. It would be far easier to get other countries to support it and be more willing to be friendly with it. By contrast if the US is highly unpopular it's more likely that others will take a more neutral, or even hostile, stance when it comes to disputes with other countries.

I can guaruntee that Putin has zero respect for Trump.

At best, he's a tool. At worst, he's a puppet and Useful Idiot.

Once Putin has no more use for Trump, he will release very damning info about him that at least will terribly erode trust in Trump, and at most get him impeached or even arrested.

First, the rest of the world has been working pretty hard to convince the US that it doesn't have much international prestige and image left to lose.

Second, Putin hasn't respected any US president. Trump doesn't represent any change there.

This Putin issue continues to wad up the panties of leftists. Trump and Putin are enemy one and two for the left. Together they took down the old bag.

Trump isn't like any president we've had within living memory. Information that would have ruined any other politician's candidacy (like the pussy grab thing) has just rolled off him. Future leaks are likely to be no more effective. Especially since Democrats can't exactly rally behind Putin on that score after having made such a big deal about his interference in the election.

Being seen favorably by people in general is not the same as being respected by other world leaders.

But I have no doubt that Obama is "respected" in some sense. I think he is respected in exactly the sense that he does not exhibit or expect respect for America. He is the president for those who do not wish to respect America.

And that's fine. Opinions differ.

Arguing about this with any meaning requires us to believe that Trump understands what respect actually is. I'm not sure that's the case.

I'm not sure it's relevant. I think that arguing about this with any meaning requires us to believe that Europeans (for example) can offer "respect for America" as a valuable commodity worth trading for. I'm not sure that's the case. In fact, I'm pretty sure it isn't.

Wow! You should be careful what you wish for.

If it can be legally established that Trump was working with Putin to defeat Clinton,
then Trump will be facing impeachment,
then Trump will get thrown out of office, and
then Trump will go to jail.

You mean he provided the passwords to Putin to hack the morons at DNC? Maybe he convinced the old bag to install her home brew server?

Then of course if Trump gets impeached, we get Pence. ;)

Your level of understanding is truly exceptional.

Crossbow didn't say these things would be proved, or even are true. He pointed out that the way logger claimed Trump and Putin took Hillary down "together" suggest that logger thinks this is what happened and approved.

Once again, you are showing your stunning attention to detail.

I never said that impeachment of Trump was going to occur any day now, any week now, any month now, or any year now.

Just go back and read my original posting on the matter if you continue to doubt such an obvious fact.

Ah, Bizzarro World. How's the weather there these days?

Actually it is what the left thinks, you can tell by the way they're acting.

I've heard arguments that that latter event is actually what many Republicans hope for. Trump Lite, trumpism without the embarrassment of Trump himself.

If eu respect is not worth trading for, then who are you going to respect bad trust ? Russia ? That woukd even be more bizarre. Nobody ? You are welcome to try it alone. You may find out after a while that not respecting allies might not do so well for tge workd stability.
