Being a racist while having a soft skull

I have no idea what those links are supposed to mean apart from our race relations commissioners has always been a waste of money.

If you read them instead if just seeing the headline and dismissing the rest, you might learn something, for example, that we have a fair number of hate-fuelled racists in our country.

And as for the RRC, I'm absolutely happy that we have one, I just wish the office had more actual power, like the power to prosecute racists and bigots under hate crime statutes for the stuff like what was done to that mosque in Queenstown.

There is a big difference between free speech and speech without consequences. If we want to put an end to the existence of people like Phil Arps in this country, then we need to start making it very difficult for them to live their daily lives. We need to make it so that society simply doesn't not tolerate having them around.

I thought Arps was jailed.

Do you understand I don't give a damn whether they want to or not?

I don't want to live in a world where people punch other people when they get mad, and such behavior is tolerated. I don't care why they are mad.

That's not quite as bad calling the Capital Insurrection "Just a bunch of people walking into a building" but it's close.

Why do people do this? Whenever it's Nazis or Racists you have to call it "Having an opinion" or "Talking."

Call things what they are. Own your opinions.

"I don't want to live in a world where people punch other people for using racial slurs."

The OP can cheer this on, but it’s obviously murder (or at the very least manslaughter).

So one person dead, one person jailed for the best part of his life. One amused Suburban Turkey.

Not the optimal outcome is it?

Now if he had been throwing popcorn of course that would be an entirely different story, they you go get your gun and shoot the bastard.

If the old man was being harassed by the young guy and shot him I bet a lot of the people calling this political murder would say how bravely he stood his ground. Hell in Florida old people can just shoot black people for no reason and get lots of support.

I have absolutely no idea what you are on a bout.

To me it is what is in the dictionary

"a violent or brutish criminal or bully
a brutal thug"

You've been here for 15 years, cullennz. I can't believe that you haven't been sufficiently exposed to the US use of the term to know what it means in this context.

Good stuff. Then work on a world where hate speech isn't tolerated and in fact is punished and the cops aren't racist so that people feel they can have recourse to non-violent ways to resolve situations.

This whole incident is a prime example of how systemic racism works against minorities and how many people don't see it.

Subject minorities to increased levels of provocation on a daily basis and tell them that the dominant culture values the provocation more than the harm done to them and that they better not react to it. When the minorities do inevitably react (as any group would to constant provocation) the narrative is then that the minorities are more violent (and the stats show it) and don't live up to the same standards as the dominant culture. Which is then used as an excuse for further racism and persecution. Which leads to increased reactions.

Observers like yourself only see the minorities 'overreacting' and not living up to your expectations. And that argument is logical in a given single instance but completely misses the greater context. But saying 'I don't care about the greater context, just don't punch people' might be a wonderful sentiment it is a completely privileged opinion which isn't going to change the situation and in fact only perpetuates the problems.

Funnily enough what MIGHT change the situation is every racist being punched to death every time they open their stupid mouths to insult a black man. They'd probably soon learn to stop it. But I think we would both agree that's probably a sub-optimal strategy too.

Sounds like everyday life as a woman. Yet somehow we don't go round punching every man who makes a sexist comment.

There's absolutely no confusion, I'm tracking this exchange just fine and I'm amazed to see you attempting to muddy these incredibly shallow waters.

You accused me of lying and fabricating quotes earlier, where did this come from?

"I'm tracking this exchange just fine" and then you missed the fact that I was talking to Lithrael before you chimed in. The lie was that poster's, not yours.

What it means is what cullennz said. Just an English language usage that's been around all our lives.

Right wingers have appropriated it, that's true. But if you are not a Fox news guy, you literally never hear it used 'untowardly'. You hear President Obama calling the summer rioters 'thugs'. Do you think the secondary use haa eclipsed the older use in the USA? Is Obama in on dogwhistling? I didn't know that.

Nice try! I'm pretty sure that I know where you went adrift but I'll leave this as it stands.

Now, about this, from your good self;

"So here's the question: why did you need to fabricate quotes to support your argument?"

Could you elucidate in order that I may fully answer your question? A good start would be to identify the "fabricated" quotes.

It's news to me, this very day, that the term is used as a pejorative against people of colour and in common use.

I've heard the term used in the phrase ,"Thug Life", but that usage implies coolness and quick thinking.

This only became true because Tupac Shakur specifically reclaimed the term to mean this, when HE used it. Here he is talking about it:

cullenz is, frankly, using it in the exact way that Tupac says that "these *************" mean it - as a slur. If he didn't mean it to be racist, then he failed to communicate properly.

And again the same half dozen people just by pure random chance choose to just not understand the exact things that let them be argumentatively on the side of the racists, just like the last 10 discussions with a racial factor, just like the next 10 discussion with a racial factor.

But nobody notice or bring it up because that would be rude.

The mistake here was that the confrontation took place in front of witnesses and a surveillance camera. Stand your ground laws work much better when the killer is the only witness to the events left alive to tell their side of the story.

I didn't want to say it because I knew you'd cover for me. Thanks.
