I wonder if they'll build a dam outside Taco Bell?

Beavers return to New York City after 200 years

POSTED: 6:39 p.m. EST, February 23, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Beavers grace New York City's official seal. But the industrious rodents have not been seen in the flesh here for as many as 200 years -- until this week.

Biologists videotaped a beaver swimming up the Bronx River on Wednesday. Its twig-and-mud lodge had been spotted earlier on the river bank, but the tape confirmed the presence of the animal itself. (Watch beaver swim in Bronx River )

"It had to happen because beaver populations are expanding, and their habitats are shrinking," said Dietland Muller-Schwarze, a beaver expert at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse. "We're probably going to see more of them in the future."

I wonder how one becomes a "beaver expert?" :)

You know what this means: French trappers sure to follow, I suggest closing the border w/ Quebec.

"Beavers" are the English Canadians. We Quebecers are "frogs".

Get your zoology straight Mister. :D

Beavers have been back in Chicago for a while now, trees near the river have to be wrapped to keep them from chewing them down.

Understandable. Beavers go right for the woodies, even those that are not by a river. Wrapping the woodies can help stave off such attacks or so I've heard.

Wally- "Boy, Beav. You weren't supposed to go to New York. Yer gunna get it now."

Ah, I thought this was another B Spears thread, and her new rehab failure was in NY.

:) Oh no! Does this mean that beaver hats will be fashionable again?

During a trip to Ottawa in 1995, my sister (then about 15) and I went with a friend to the Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec. One exhibit had an actor playing a courier des boix (sp?), a trapper-trader whose type frequented French-controlled North American territory in the 18th century.

His realistic set - woods, canoe and all - consisted of actual artifacts from the era, and among his props was a staple of his trade, a beaver pelt. I stroked the pelt, commenting on how soft and warm it felt, thought for a moment, and offered my sister in exchange for the specimen. Without missing a beat, he reached out to stroke my sister...

Leave it to our local paper to not notice a problem with the headline -

I love it when newspapers do things like this. I once worked at a military post and the post newspaper published its Christmas issue with a photograph of a reenactment of The Last Supper done by Catholic soldiers; below the photo was the headline: New General Calls Meeting of Unit Commanders. :)

Oh, no, that means the old expression 'When Christ was a Corporal' is wrong. He was a General. Man, military slang is under assault.
