Beatles or Stones?

Who. Yes, Who.
Beatles are pretentious. Stones are grating. Who is the best.

Wait... are you voting for The Who or for Yes? Make up your danged mind. ;)

Depends on my mood. If I'm in a bar, and someone plays Bang Bang Maxwell Silverhammer or Penny Lane, I know I am in the wrong bar, but if they put on just about anything by the Stones, I'm good to go.

If I want to read a good book, the Stones would be distracting, but Sgt. Pepper would be a good choice.

Beatles over Stones. Though neither can hold a light to the Mighty Zep.

The Beatles were great, I like them.

But I can turn up the Stones in the car and roll down the windows.

Try to picture a car driving down the street with the windows open and blaring "A Day In The Life".

So, Stones.

Beatles, because their compositions were so darned good. Then the Almighty and Powerful Led Zeppelin because they're great. Then Cream (on some days, Cream is tops). Then the Stones, because they have great low-down dirty rock n' roll.

They are all necessary, though, in my opinion.

The Stones never did it for me, but I have never heard one of their albums, just what happens to wander into my ears from elsewhere.

Is there an album of theirs that is likely to make me go...Wow!
It seems only fair to give The Strolling Bones a proper chance.

I do generally tend to prefer my music a bit heavier than The Beatles (when I'm in that mood).

While I'm here. Yesterday I listened to Freebird for the first time in years....Ooooh! Sooooooooo good.

.

Hmmm.

I like maybe ...five ... Stones songs.

I like considerably more Beatles songs, but I like the Stones songs more than any one of the Beatles songs..

I just listen to Led Zep. I have to agree with the folks who have agreed on this point earlier.

It seems like no matter what the Stones do, there's a part of the song that just annoys the hell out of me. I like 'Paint it Black', but does the guy HAVE TO HUM!? Gah! The 'woo woo' section of 'Sympathy for the Devil' could probably have been left on the cutting room floor. It just seems there's SOMETHING they do that grates on my nerves.

It is no mystery to me why, during their prime, Zepplin outsold the Stones three to one.

For me, when I listen to Led Zep I, it sounds as fresh as ever, even though I've heard it more times than I can recall. I can't imagine what it must have been like for someone experiencing it for the first time when it came out. It's raw, powerful, and extremely visceral. Those four guys really had it together.

edited to add: must proofread before posting!

So, Stones.

Tsk, tsk...selective argumentation.

Try to picture a car driving down the street with the windows open and blaring "Helter Skelter".

Then, do the same with "Lady Jane".

The Stones win more times than the Beatles.

"Honky Tonk Women" vs. "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".

Well, gosh, if we going to make this an expansive catalogue of who belongs in the pantheon of the gods of the 1960s British Invasion, then sure:

First Wave: The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Animals, The Yardbirds

Second Wave: Pink Floyd, Cream, and Led Zeppelin.

"Honky Tonk Women" vs. "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".
"Birthday" vs. "Ruby Tuesday"

"Yer Blues" vs. "Under My Thumb"

"I've Got a Feeling" vs. "Angie"

"Revolution" vs. "Time Is On My Side"

This is still favorable selection. You would need to stack the rockers from each side up against each other, but either way, you can't go wrong.

Both are far from my favorite group, but it's laughable to suggest anyone other than the Beatles as best ever.
